valve adjustment

ok my buddy has a 2nd gen 12v and asked me to help him adjust his vavles. if i had a step by step process of how to i know i can do it! and IIRC theres an article in the sticky section about how to!

anyways thats besides my point my question is do you need the barring tool to do the adjustment? if so is there any places i could go to rent it or get it that day nad not have to wait to order it, i know i'll need it later so why not buy it!

TIA
David

You can use a ratchet and socket on the alternator pulley bolt and turn the engine over that way. It really works, I've done it multiple times.

Me, I couldn't get the alternator nut to rotate the motor backwards, it just spun in the belt after moving it an inch or two. So I used a big wrench on the fan nut to rotate it backwards. 36mm or 1 7/16" if I remember correctly.

This little article explains the "companion cylinder" method of valve adjustment pretty well:

http://dodgeram.org/tech/dsl/valve_adj/12_valve.html

I wound up buying the barring tool from Cummins (about $50) when I managed to get the little TDC pin behind the IP stuck in there. Had to rotate the motor back forwards a hair to get it loose. If you don't fool with the TDC pin in the first place you can avoid this hassle.

I usually do 1 cylinder at a time, roll it over till both valves are on the base circle of the cam and adjust and so on and so forth

I will LEND you my barring tol. You have got to return it.... Your friends 2nd GEN 12V has got a "BUTTON" behind the pump that will give you TDC. One will turn the engine over while the other one will push in the plunger"VERY" easy. you can shear the tip off if your not careful. it will give youTDC at #1 or #6. Start from 1 and go through the valve's as Cummins spec's. HTH

To simplify, 2ndGen 12valves are the same procedure as for 1stGens. A 12V is a 12V.
