24 valve CTD no need for valve adjustment..!?
I was just told by a well known diesel shop west of Austin our 24 valve trucks do not need adjustment. In fact tech said it would be a waste of money as they see the trucks "all day long" and have not seen any out of wack.
Furthermore a bastrop dodge dealer said they could adjust them while i waited....thought the motor needed to be cold to do so.
All i know is it sounds clanky and my mileage and throttle response suck bi time with 242K on it.
Confused on this now because i thought the manual (not that service manuals are gospel but...) gives direction to this issue as a maintenance item.
Also one dealer wants 245.00 and the other 149.00 to adjust them. I have not done this but seen the thread with great directions and it doesn't seem to bad....maybe someone in Bastrop or Austin can give some insight on shops etc.

I've adjusted mine once, and they were all within tolerance when checked. It's a fairly easy job. With the machinist yet in me, I simply adjusted them to the middle of the tolerance specs as long as I was at it.

Had mine adjusted at 150K miles when the injectors went in. Had 2 that were a little loose. IMHO peace of mind to least check them, worth the few bucks spent.

You can reuse the valvecover gasket. I have reused mine twice so far and no leaks to report. I have done a few valve adjustments on 24V's. Most of them had at least 1 that was past specs.. Its an easy job and there is a write up somewhere around here on how to do it... Piece of mind..

To my knowledge No....reuseable
Yes they should only be done COLD...warm or hot motors...metals can be "swelled" or expanded and if you set your screw, once the motor is cold (metals contract) it could be out of tolerance's.
cummins says 150k...
my mechanic says 150k, but will second the OP's mechanic in that 99 out of 100 he does DOES NOT NEED IT once he opens it up.

It's fairly easy to do, and only takes a couple hours.
Here's the how-to guide:

Question is did the valves back off or is there something building up on the seats not letting the valve close all the way? I though about adjusting mine but wonder if I found one, could it be a bad valve seat. Adjustment under this situation would just enhance a leaking valve. How about the thoughts of others?
