Valve Adjustment on 24 Valve ISB

I have a buddy who just adjusted his valves on his 95 CTD. I found the link to the valve adjustment procedure at https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...n&onlynewfaq=1 . My question is, when do you know that you have to adjust your valves?

the service manuel recommends 150k. or excessive clattering at idle.

I did mine at 65,000 and found several valves out of spec. After the adjustment the truck sounded less clattery and had better response and power.

I adjusted mine at around 140,000 only needed to tighten down a couple just a little, just had them run again at 275,000 and same thing - nothing badly out of adjustment.
They are really simple to do.

On 24v's I have never seen or heard of one that was way out of adjustment ..... or even close!
And that's measured against the .010/.020 DTR recommended settings.... not just the WIDE allowable range listed by Dodge!

Just FYI, the clearances usually tighten up over time not loosen.

That's because most wear occurs at the valve and seat causing the valve to rise in the guide.

The Commings tech I talked to said that the 24 valves rarely need adjustment. I took my 02 in for the adjustment and the service manager said to save my money and not do it. If Commings says that maybe they know what they are talking about.

The valve guides, at least with added HP, are another story....

106,000 miles. 20 of 24 were like these!

bigdav160,
You jogged my memory - It's been while but I kind of remember of a couple running on the snug side but I did have several a few thousands loose. Probably all were within Dodge specs.
This last time I had a mechaniac run them and he indicated they were all very close, Only charged me $40. One thing he required was to let my truck set in his shop overnight to cool down before setting them.

Pardon my ignorance but what the heck is a commings tech? Is it or could it be a Cummins tech?
