Valve adjustment tips your momma never taught you
Ran the top end Sun. morning before work; noted some things I haven't seen mentioned before when this is discussed.

1) Wouldn't be a bad idea to pull the fake valve cover thingy off the night before and hose the top of the engine off. Mine had enough dust and crud in there that it was tedious taking apart and not dropping junk in the valve train. (I believe my Haynes manual mentioned this, but I didn't see it until later.)

2) Do stretching exercises before attempting No. 6 cyl.

3) Put 5 spd. in neutral type position. Engine turns a little smoother if you're not walking the truck across the yard.

Not too proud to be helpful,
Rob

Just did mine last weekend.. We sprayed brake wash in between the rocker boxes and used the air compressor to blow all the crud out. Worked really well

Fred

Haven't done this yet.
Are the rocker boxes sealed with a gasket or an O-ring?
The front end is going to be apart this weekend so I may as well do this all at once.

I have yet to adjust my vales since owning the truck... can you put the TDC cam pin into the hole without having to remove the vacuum pump? What is envolved in getting the TDC pin to go into place?

Re:Valve adjustment tips your momma never taught you
The rocker boxes have gaskets for each one, they are rubber. You can probably use them again if yours are not leaking...Mine were leaking so I replaced them. Be careful when locating the pin. From what I understand you can snap it off if your not careful.... You need 2 people, one to use a wrench to turn the motor sloooowly. The other to gently push the pin in.....There is more on this subject in the archives. Go to search and find the post on valve adjustments/ TDC...TDC Timing pins. I believe it was posted by OkieBroncRider...It gives various ways to find top dead center..Hope this helps...

Fred
