Timing bumping help

Timing bumping help

Hi, I have turned my fuel screw in and shaved down my fuel pin, and backed off the idle, and noticed a nice difference,
I would like to bump my timing but I really have no idea what I am doing, the other things I have done have seemed really easy thanks to some great explanations from this forum, so can someone give me a bit of a rundown on where to look and what to do to bump the timing,

I had a look a the sticky and found how to.
So there is 3 nuts on the fuel pump right?, 2 that look like they are attatched to the timing box on the front of the pump and one on the rear attatched to a bracket.
A guy loosens those 3 nuts and the hole fuel pump with rotate?
And if it rotates, to bump it 1/8 you turn the fuel pump to the right or left when looking a the front of the truck,

Left, rotate the top of the pump toward the engine. Have fun! It might be quite a job the first time, but after that, it will probably be much easier.

3 nuts to the timing housing, one bolt to the power steering bracket.

i read somewhere here that if You advance the timing too much it could drop a valve?

Nope. Might crack a piston or 6, but you are more likely to push out the head gasket.

Thanks for the help on doing this timing, I figured it all out and went at it, good luck trying to get a wrench on that bottom bolt, I had a mirror down there to try to see where that bolt was to get the wrench on it and there is no way of getting it unless you have a special tool and the sticky says get a extension for the one thats cramped up closest to the motor, youll need about a 8 inch extension, some mechanics tools and some crafty manouvering to make that all happen, I gave up, I think Ill be leaving mine.

I think that I finally got that bottom bolt with a 1/4 inch ratchet wrench and the right combination of extensions. Not fun at all!

Timing with pulse adapter

Hi there! I do have a pulse adaptor for clamping on the injector lines. What is the base timing for theses engines using this, or do they even do this? I know that some use a magnetic pick up rather than a pulse adaptor and timing light.

Now when you talk of bumping the timing, what to what timing degree do you go if you are only cranking up the pump?

I am doing tons of research since the truck I bought, a month ago, blew up after 10 miles. Lost oil pressure and started knocking, sounds like a connecting rod bearing has let go. No oil pressure at idle, but rev it up and there is pressure. Will be pulling the engine out this week and ripping it down to see what the vedict is.

They don't give a spec for that, just static timing.

The classic bump is 1/8" from stock, that gives somewhere in the neighborhood of 16-18 degrees.

Thanks for the input. Will make sure to mark the pump timing with chisel marks so as to get it back to where it was, after a complete strip down of the engine.

before you give up , i just did mine, i took out my power steering pump from the front gear case, and that made excess to the pump bottom bolt a whole lot easier, and then put a ratcher strap on the top of the pump and tachet it 1/8" toward the head, was much easier with the steering pump out.
