Thinking about bumping my timing some more

Hey guys, I should be getting a timing kit within the next couple of weeks, and I am thinking about bumping my timing to 17.5 or 18* and seeing how I like that. Not sure what i want to go to yet though. I have heard you can get by with a lot more on the smaller pumps. I dont want to blow my head gasket, but I am only making 34psi right now, so I should be ok I think. Just looking for reccomendations on what would be the best for my truck. I have the 160 pump, and my timing is set at 16* right now.

your not going to notice a difference between 17.5 and 18 and why waste your time bumping the pump 1.5 degrees?

Also mine blew at 16 with 38 psi boost. there's no telling what it will hold or not.

I would go to 20 if I were going to move it at all. You can time it without the timing kit as well. Pin the pump, pull the gear, bring it to top dead, and then back it up from there however you want it set.

The cpl will tell you the stock timing and with the pump pined and the motor at top dead you know it is at stock timing, you can mark the dampner and back it up from there.

1.5 degrees will make more difference than you think. Its only about 3 degrees over stock to begin with, and it made a huge difference. And I want the complete timing kit so that it is done right. There is a reason the timing kit was made. You can do it other ways, but it wont be as accurate in my opinion.

how is it not accurate? You know its at 12.5 stock (for example) so you pin the pump. then you break the gear loose and find exact top dead center. you now have the motor set at the exact stock setting. By knowing the stock timing you can mark the dampner then back it up and know exactly where it is set at.

Just cause you had your timing bumped to 16, the pump is still set at 12.5 so with it pined and at top dead it is 12.5 still. Its not a backwoods method, just a different one.

Also 1.5 degrees isn't going to make a drastic difference. Ive had lots of different timing set on different trucks. (mine from 16-26, my buddies p pumped 24v from 18-33 were it is now) I think youd like 20 its a very conservative number that will yeild great milage and great mid range power.

Wana 12v , that is a backwoods method , you have absolutly NO way of knowing what your timing is set at, You can't even set stock timing with both pins , as the timing pins can be off a couple of degrees, please don't ever work on someone else's truck, for their sake...

Eric- I would bump to 18 , I think you will like it, I am at 17.5, and I am pleased with it.

HEY JKM, do you notice any irregular pinging or missing type sounds at about 1500-2000 RPM? Im at about 18* and my truck makes noise on the highway like it is missing, just bothering me. I wonder if it is just me hearing things because I always drive the truck. Thanks.

I don't like to set anyones timing above 15.5* without o-rings if its their sole meens of transportation..... I have seen some last at 20* while others go at 16*. It can be a gamble and if you aren't willing to replace the HG be careful where you set it.

I don't notice anything out of the ordinary as far as noise , but if your like me, when a NEW sound starts , it drives you crazy , althought it is nothing to worry about.

Are they marine injectors? If so, they dont have the right spray pattern, and may not run right in your truck. Also, if that is the case, the high timing will have the injectors spraying before the piston gets close enough to get the spray in the bowl, so it may be your timing is too high, injectors dont have the right spray pattern, or a mix of both.

Cumminsdriver635 mine is at 18.5 and it ran for quite a while..6 years, at that before the 10 plate and about a year after the 10 plate before the gasket went and took the head with it. I also want to add it did not go while getting into it. I was just easing along with a trailer on a country road and bam. Temp guage maxed and oil every everywhere. With all that said mine is still at 18.5 and will stay there because it runs great!

I would go ahead and bump the timing a little more and since you said your getting a timing kit if you don't like it drop it back down. I only had 3mm lift when I checked mine before I bumped it, now it is at 18* (6mm lift) and runs WAY better. But I need more RPM's and HD valve springs, it pulled through 3600 too easy...
