The other night my brake lights stayed on after I turned off the truck. After a short time of cussing, I discovered that there is a switch that the brake pedal rests on, which turns OFF the brake lights when depressed. The switch had been pushed back far enough that it wasn't engaging. WHAT is the name or number of the part (or clip or nut or whatever) that holds that switch in place? There is something that holds it, isn't there?

 

So you're switch is stuck in? I had the same problem, but it was caused by the swtch sliding down to far rather than getting stuck in... I just had to tie-wrap the switch farther up in order to make contact at the right place.

Unfortunately, I can't help you if it is stuck in. Altough I don't see why you'd need the OEM piece; if I recall correctly, any push-pin switch would have been adequate.

 

I can't find a good pic of that in my FSM. I would go to the dealer, they can pull up an exploded diagram and find the piece for you. Or just go to the junkyard and get it out of another old Dodge.

 

To clarify: The button on the switch isn't stuck - the switch itself gets pushed through the bracket and mine has nothing to keep it in place, so it slowly gets pushed out. I just wasn't sure if it was held on by a nut or a clip or what.

 

I had a problem on my original 91 when it was new. There are 2 types of switchws for the stoplamps. One is for cruise equiped vehicles and the other is without cruise.

The brake pedal itself should rest on the mechanical stop, not the switch itself. In my cause it was adjusted with to much of a intial gap and it resulted in the cruise shutting itself when the truck hit a stiff bump.

The switch needs to be set with a small amount of play in the pedal up position to avoid crushing the switch in and not to much that the bumps affect cruise/light operation.

I found the part listed in an online dealer catalog under:
Mechanical Catalog Electrical , Chassis electrical ,Switches ,Stoplamp switch

No part numbers are listed in the catalog, but the price for the OEM switch is around $30 and it's listed as 92-93

As per the FSM under BRAKES, page 5-9

Seems I recall to move the switch forward you have to press some tangs or something to let it move forward. Then it ratchets as the brake pedal moves it back to the correct position.
