Heater fan resistors

Where exactly are they? How do you get to them?

Thanks!

Remove the glove box. The resistor pack is resistance wire coils held inside the air duct for cooling. There's a 5 terminal faston connector the plugs onto it. Coupla screws hold it in place on the duct.

they hide behind the glove box. you open the glove box and push down on the center of the back wall of the glove box and the glove box flips forward and dumps everything on the floor. you should then be able to get at the resister.

Found it, got it out, now how do I know it's bad? The original problem is that the wiring gets hot, and i keep burning up switches.

Thanks!

if wiring keeps getting hot and burning out switches it sounds like the blowermotor might be pulling more power than it should. have you checked the heater box to see if it is clogged or something. could also think about doing the relay upgrade.

You should be able to measure the resistance with a multimeter.

There isn't anything that the resistor block could do to burn out the switch. Like c-wolfie says, excess draw by the heater motor could cause a problem.

More likely is that the connectors are deteriorating. Moisture, or some other agents like ammonia, even in small quantities, can cause the connections to deteriorate.

If the switch connector has been hot enough to discolor the insulation, it will not make good enough contact with the new switch to avoid overheating, and burning out the switch.

Best bet would be to install a new switch, and connector if needed, and either Jim-L's relay mod or the one I published about a week ago.

Ok, so where can I get a good blower motor? Mine is pretty new, and it's from Napa. It came with really small wires, smaller than the ones on the stock fan, and the ones I looked at from Advance Auto and Autozone look the same. Are these any good?

There's a way to replace the blower motor and wheel with a GM unit.

No matter what, the blower motors in these trucks tend to take out fuse box, ignition switch, and the fan switchs. It's worthwhile to put in relays and an extra fuse to take some of that load off the weak wiring.
