Fuel problems

I am catching air somewhere but I can not find a fuel leak anywhere. It skips at high rpms. When it sits for awhile sometimes it catches air and will not crank up. I have to crack the injectors to get the air out and runs fine. Today warming up idling it caught air and shut off. I don't have an idea of where to start looking. This started after I took the top off the pump to see how the new cut fuel pin was doing. The top is tight on the pump.
Would a bad lift pump cause this?

It could. Lightly pressurize the fuel tank to find air leaks - they become diesel leaks when you take a blow gun and a shop rag and shoot a few quick blasts in the filler neck.
