Different kind of runaway

I was tooling down the freeway this morning and when I let off the foot feed the the engine didn't get the message. I tromped it to see if it was just stuck and it stuck floored.
About this time I was realizing the error of my ways in not having a shutdown solenoid or a pull cable!

I had to get it pulled over in 5th with both feet on the bonders to kill it!
Looked under the hood and found a frayed throttle cable. Nursed it to Napa, and they said the closest cable was in New Jersey and a week away, so I bought a stiffer spring until I find a new cable.

Any ideas where I can get one that is not the dealership?

I had something similar like that happen to me in a 340 4sp cuda going down the interstate in Ft.Worth. throttle stuck and as I was nearing the wrong end of an 18 wheeler, I pushed in the clutch ( tachin about 7K), figured it was gonna blow anyway and if it did, it was going to do it MY way.....Smashed on the throttle and it came undone. One of the few times in my life I went home and checked the shorts !

I had a '74 'Cuda and the throttle froze (iced) wide open on a summer morning.

Might have to make buy cable and stops from home depot or some place and make your own.

Lord I hope not. Maybe I should convert it to fly-by-wire.... might be easier.

Actually making one isn't that hard. I've made quite a few cables. The stops are aluminum and you could easily crush them onto either end with a small c-clamp. I made a short length 1/8" cable as a bandaid for one of my parking brake cables over a year ago and it's still work just fine.

Ok, thanks. I have a brutal spring on there now and it takes a while to get to highway speed, but it should hold until the weekend. I will get phenominal mileage!

The skinny shift cables from a ten-speed bicycle might pull through the casing; then the ends could be fabbed from 80-pound class crimp-on wire leader collars from your local sporting goods store. That's how I used to fix my broken shift cables.

Mark

This guy says it's available @ Carquest Granted the thread is a few years old, but you might just get lucky.

I don't know.

Where in NJ is it @ ? If it's local, I'll pick it up for you and overnight it, if you want me to.

BTW,

It's available on EBAY

Two feet on the brakes. My truck doesn't want to stop, so I had to wail on the binders in 5th. Wouldn't have been able to stop it with an auto, throw it in neutral, pull over as fast as i could, pop the hood to reach for the lever, ducking shrapnel...
