probably the heater element itself is bad.

It IS a freeze plug, basically. Unscrew the nut that holds the cord to the heater, pull the cord out, and you will see how to take it out.

Be ready with a bucket - or drain the radiator first.

Cummins.

It just bolts in, it's kind of like one of those emergency expandable freeze plugs.

I got mine just as the one from cummins but I paid much less than the dealer was asking, I don't remember where got it but I asked this question about a year ago and found a place where to get it for cheap. The brand is fleetguard and comes with cord and all.

just had my block heater rig checked and I'm glad I did; the cord AND the plug/coil were absolutely wasted, beyond redemption

fortunately the water pump and thermostat were being changed out so the radiator was already emptied.

doesn't really get that cold right here on the shore of a large body of saltwater (Long Island Sound) but I like to plug both my diesels in to tuck them in at night (use a timer that cycles on from 0500 to 0800)
