Weight distribution hitch setup

Weight distribution hitch setup

I have a Reese WD duel cam anti sway setup on my TT. The bars are HUGE about 1 and 1/4 inch thick solid, taper to the camper side. My question is it’s getting easier to put the bars on meaning lifting the locking pin on the camper. I was told from the dealer it was setup to use the 6th link in the chain from the end. I’ll bet I could put it on the 7th link without much effort. There have been absolutely no problems with sway or bounce with the current setup but it’s just getting easier and easier to put the bars on leading me to believe the bars are bending but they aren’t. Is there a break in period on these setups, I’ve had the camper out maybe 18 times this year, new WD from the dealer when I bought the camper. I’ve only pulled the camper once for about 10 miles without the WD and will NEVER do that again.

Should I put the chain on the 7th link or leave it the way it is?

I guessed at my correct number of links but couldn't be sure. I went to the CAT scales and checked my axle weights. For me, going from the 5th link to the 4th took 260 lbs off the rear axle. It transferred 160 lbs to the front truck axle and 100 lbs to the trailer axles. I decided on the 4th link because that is were my front axel had the same weight with the trailer attached as without. P.S. I weighed my truck before starting the process. Pic in gallery.

It sounds to me like your truck's rear springs are just "Settling" a bit and that's why it's getting easier to hook the bars up. If you're still getting no sway then leave it like it is. If the bars are loose when you hook it up then it's time for another link up.

I don't know the specs but you should be able to get them for your hitch / trailer. The ball should be at "x" height with nothing on it, then you lower the trailer fully onto the ball and then essentially lift things back up to a certain height as specified in the instructions. Basically after your ball height is set you should be able to do it by feel after a few times. If you change anything, like what is in the back of your truck or in the trailer like tanks of water that will change things a little but not too much unless it's 5,000 lbs of gravel or something like that.

One of things I've noticed when putting my bars on is the effect level has on the process. If the TT front to back level is off much it can be a bear to put the bars on. I have an electric hitch and like to hook the TV to the TT, check the level and then raise the whole thing until I get close to level.

It only changes things by one link in the chain but when they are hooked at level, the extra link snaps in place pretty easily. The tow is definately better this way.

... but there are times when I cannot get the 2 hooked and level and have to settle for on less link.

Some thing to consider, the WD bars are taking weight off the rear off the truck. I have had my WD bars cranked for an extened trip, camper packed heavily. Started to rain and when trying to leave at a stop light, had to lock it into 4x4 to get going. Pulled over and eased up on the bars.

Just my experience.

Sorry for the dealy but I was out with the camper hunting. I left the bars setup on the same link and had no problems again so maybe there is something the the springs settiling but after 56K on the clock I don't think so but anything is possible. Yes if the TT is not level or the truck is not they can be a bear to put on but "most" of my camping is on level ground.

I was mainly just curious if there was a break in period for the WD and normal or something to look out for.
