I have had NO problems towing with the 3.73 gears, and I tow heavy loads. If I were to do anything to make the towing experience andy better, I might forget I am towing something. Just keep an eye on your rpm's and stay in the 1600-2000 range if you can. I have found that 5th gear does a great job, like it was designed to do with towing.

I just towed 17-18 pounds with 3.73's from tampa to fort myers to hollywood to miami to melbourne to orlando and back to tampa totaling around 630 miles. I like to tow around 65 mph for saftey and optimum mpg but that is very hard with 3.73's cause my rpms are around 1600 at that time which is considered lugging and sometimes I will get that ungrateful downshift if in cruise when going up minor hills. I wish I opted for 4.10s. So, basically for now i chill at 70-73 mph to keep engine from lugging. Before i swap gears, im waiting for a good proggy for towing to come out to help with mpg and a little bit more low end torque!!!!! MPG on overhead avg 20city 80hwy says 9.7 to 10.3. In city it is a little bit of a dog but i dont get on it either as i want this truck to last!!!!! again 410s would be nice in the city and highway to slow my speeds down to 65 while rpms would be around 2000!!!!!!

Maybe it's a tire size thing Ccoop.
My truck has what I believe to be a 48RE and 3.73 rear. 1600rpm is 50ish, 1800 is 65ish and right at 2000 is 70.
I have 265/70-17s.
Empty I would imagine 1600 at 65mph would be a very economical cruise. But towing at that rpm would NEVER do!
