How do I find freight?
I agree. Kind of like going to Burger King. You could probably cook a better burger for less money, but not everyone is willing to put in the extra work it takes so are satisfied with buying one.
Once I hauled a load of hardwood flooring and made almost $4 a mile on it because I was johnny on the spot and willing to get it there faster than anyone else could by driving 31 hours straight through - no sleep (a violation of almost all the rules - the only way he could have got it there that fast was to sent it air freight - and the cost to do THAT made $4 a mile look real good). The customer even paid half by Western Union before I ever left the couch just so I knew he was legit. Hauled several more loads for that guy, then he disappeared. Too bad, because I was getting to like him. Great thing about that guy was he did not want to go through U-ship, so that allowed me to avoid their fees.
Hauling cars illegally is not a good idea unless you are hauling them one at a time. Meaning, one car on a one car trailer. No one is going to care about that, for all anyone knows you bought the car and are taking it home or you are moving it for your brother in law or whatever. But if you put 2-3 cars on a wedge, you stand out as a commercial hauler and you are gonna get pulled over, called in or ratted out every time.
If you want to run as a wildcat (illegal hauler) for fun and profit, haul real freight, household goods or furniture and do it in rental trucks. It used to be no body paid any attention to rental trucks but that ain't the case no more. They stand out now - most states now require rental trucks to go through the scales just like the big rigs, but unless you are speeding they wont pull you over on the road. If you are overweight avoid the chicken coops (scale houses), stay on the truck routes when in towns, don't park in stupid places (i.e. on the street in small towns to sleep) and keep your ears (CB) on to listen for any mobile patrols (Texas loves to do these - they'll set up in a random picnic area and flag all trucks into the turnoff and use portable scales) and everything will be fine.
For all anyone knows, you are another Joe moving to another state. Running wildcat in a pickup with a nice big trailer is not a good idea anymore, they are looking for those big white trailers with 3-4 axles and pulling them over right and left.
