Turbo Blanket
Turbo Blanket
Hey-
I was just looking through the new JEGs catalog and saw a turbo blanket (wrap). Whats the deal with these? I've never seen anyone talk about these, are they good, bad or has anyone seen or used one of these? I was just wondering if it would help or hurt a turbo?

I think that they are mostly for racers, I dont know if they are waterproof or not, I was considering one, but instead I dont think Its all that much more to get your turbo ceramic coated, same with the headers. You can give it a try if you would like, but I could just see it getting wet and making a mess, unless they are made of a waterproof material.

I had one from ATP on my truck. Covered manifold and turbine housing. IT's sold as sound surpressor...is actual a thermal blanket.

They work to quiet things down and may help with under hood heat (not convinced that is a serious problem) but I found, at 400+ HP, it made EGT's slightly higher (50 - 75 degrees).
I still use ATP's Hood Blanket and Oil Pan Cover. Excellent quality.

Main reason insulating the turbo and headers is that it maintains hotter exhaust gases that exit the system faster through decreased density. Increased exhaust scavenging is also produced. It also results in less underhood heat. Any sound reduction would be minimal.
This used to be quite common on stationary engines till asbestos was outlawed. You don't see it as much any more even though new heat withstanding materials have been developed.

What about turbo cool down? If the turbo is now insulated with a blanket it will hold temp longer dont you think ? I already sit too long for 300 deg to come around before shutting down. Genos has a blanket made by Hitco the same people I believe that produce the heat shields on the shuttle ?. Pretty expensive but is of high quality. http://www.hitco.com/start.html
Dusty,
I have the turbo blanket and noticed very little difference in the cool down time.
I have pics in the member photo section.
