synthetic engine oil...worth it?
???? http://www.shell.com/home/Framework?...ellasynth.html Why is it labeled as a FULL SYNTHECTIC then?? Just wunderin.
Group III - severely processed/hydrotreated petroleum oil
Group IV - polyalphaolefin
Group V - esters , other
All 3 groups come from crude oil except group III is still made in an oil refinery, whereas IV and V are made in a chemical plant. Like Ph4tty said, group III is highly refined oil + additives, which makes it a synthetic. Synthetic oil basically means the molecules are all nearly the same size. All groups are synthetic but as you go higher in group number, the oil is more pure and the molecules of the oil are closer to the same size. That's why higher end oils are more expensive, costs more and takes longer to make. For the price and performance, I don't think you can beat Rotella T synthetic.
Rotella T synthetic is a group III synthetic. Some others are a group IV or V.
