Superchips Tuner Problem
Superchips Tuner Problem
I just installed the Superchips tuner last week for my 02 Dodge 2500 CTD and have noticed it appears to be surging mostly at idle and some while on cruise control. My truck is BONE STOCK!!! (with the exception of adding this tuner).
Has anyone else experienced this problem? What did you do to solve it?
By the way: When I returned it to stock mode the surging went away.
Thanks for any advise.

I replaced the fuel filter about 2500 miles ago. Do you think that it could be clogged up that guickly?
I had a Superchips tuner at one time too, on my otherwise stock (at that time) 2002. I felt it made the truck surge a bit (nothing dramatic) when I was coming to a stop at a stop sign or red light. It's normal when running a chip or programmer (unless it's severe). The surge you feel while in cruise control mode could be explained as follows:
Superchips makes "some" of their "extra power" by jacking up the throttle position calibration. For example, 75% throttle input may be read by the ECM as 100%. This makes the truck feel more "powerful". This is done intentionally by Superchips (and other tuners too) along with adding more fuel to increase perceived power. What does this have to do with your surging? The ECM and cruise control are programmed such that if the cruise control needs to gain 1-2 mph, it tells the ECM to give the amount of calibrated throttle input needed to achieve that. Now that Superchips has reprogrammed the ECM, that amount of throttle input is too much, as the truck surges ahead, then quickly backs off to prevent overshooting the cruise setting. My Edge EZ does the same thing, but you have to be paying attention to notice it happening. Put a trailer behind it, and it turns from a little annoyance to a benefit - it doesn't lose as much speed when it needs to adjust. The more aggressive throttle (and more fuel which = more power) works well in that situation.
Now, if the truck is idling and surging while in park (or neutral if 5 or 6 spd), that's different.
Your fuel filter could be clogged in 50 miles if you get a bad load of fuel. Your FP would have to be low before you'd notice drivability issues.

I too don't feel that what I am experiencing is "dramatic" just very annoying. Expecially since it doesn't do it when I reload the "Stock" mode.
So, if I understand you correctly this is something I must learn to tolerate ... correct?
Thanks for all the info.
There is one other thing that I did install when I got the SC. I installed a boost fooler and elbow. I don't know if this would make a diffence or not. Just to give you the whole picture.
Can we say software problem, Superchips?!!!
I also going to send it back for a refund and get me a Smarty.
Anybody have a Smarty?
I checked for codes and none were found. Did your VP44 throw codes before it went out?
Now I'm not sure if I should keep it or send it back.
