Superchips Tuner

Just got in some new superchips tuners and dyno'd them tonight. I got 32 HP increase over stock. another 01' Ram HO 6spd with an HX40 and stage 4 injectors got just over 60HP from stock. and another 60 HP gain by simply plugging in his comp box and not having it turned out. Due to the fact that the box overrides the computers boost control.

So far i've dyno'd my 01 with 4 different box's/tuners: Superchips 32HP, Hypertech Tuner 34 HP, Vanaakken box 35 HP, Edge Ez 45 HP. This HP numbers are all increases over stock on a Mustang Dynometer at roughly 4500 ft. elevation.

Working at a diesel shop with a dyno has its advantages... ;D

Looking at the curves whats the greatest gains in the lower RPM's............not the peak number? If you still have access to the data.

Re:Superchips Tuner

k dawg,

That's pretty interesting. I think I'm reading this right, but you plugged the Superchips Tuner up to a truck with a comp, stage 4 injectors (125 hp), and a HX-40, and it gained 60hp vs. not having it? Was that the peak hp gain, or the most seen in the curve? If not the peak, what was the peak gain? Also, do you see a gain when the comp is on 5x5 with the tuner? Are there any problems running them stacked like that (rough idle, part throttle missing, engine hammer)? Thanks!

Re:Superchips Tuner

Was that on the highest setting of the 3 for the Supechip Microtuner? They claim 40-50-70 horsepower increase. :

Re:Superchips Tuner

KatDiesel: I dont have the dyno sheets at home with me, i will look at them and let you know.

Banshee: what we did with the truck was unplugged the comp box that he was running, so there was nothing as far as electronics go on the truck. We did this for a baseline run. So it was on 01' HO 6spd. with 4in exhaust, afe megacannon, southbend clutch, hx40 turbo, stage 4 injectors. that setup put down 239HP to the rear tires. Next we installed the superchips tuner on the high performance setting. We then ran it and got 301 HP. Now we plugged in the comp box but did not turn it on. simply for the boost fooler. That got us to
just under 370 HP. Finally we turned the comp box on 5X5 and that got us to 430 HP 937 FT LB. it seems to run pretty good, no problems with running them stacked. we have run into problems with running the tuners and a vanakken box, which was an erratic idle. Technically you could now triple stack your truck. which is what i have tried. and it didn't seem to run correctly. I had Hypertech tuner/vanaaken box/edge amp? i think its called. the 3 stage fueling box that edge has. Didn't like the way the truck ran with all three. kind of hesitated. But i didn't have the idle problems like the 01' HO hx40 truck had.

Hope that makes some sense.

Bill G: yes it was on the highest setting. Between 30-35 HP is about all i get out of any kind of box i run on my truck. So superchips claim is about right when compared to other companies claims

Not always "peak" horsepower, sometimes you have to look in the lower RPM's to find the "claimed gains".

Re:Superchips Tuner

Kdawg, so the comp plugged in but turned off still acts as a boost fooler? Also, don't you think you should have seen better than 239 rwhp with stage 4 injectors?

Re:Superchips Tuner

I have stacked a Power Edge Comp and a Vanakken. I noticed on my first run down the highway I had a little higher idle and my engine temp gauge fluctuated up to 200 and down to 180. After running for awhile the temp settled down and the truck ran fine.(actually ran pretty good the whole time) I was told I should not run these two stacked as the engine would be a grenade (because of timing changes). I would assume that advice was correct. Do you have any good knowledge on this topic. ??? (This vanakken plugs into the Fuel control module)

No 239 sounds about right because your boost limited to right around 25 lbs. Also timing is not being advanced. The HO's stock are rated 245HP at the flywheel. Which generally dyno's at the rear wheels around 200HP.

Gene: I personally ran the hypertech tuner with the vanakken box, and nothing drastic really happened, i just didn't like the way the truck ran. Felt sluggish to me. My brother who runs the HO 6spd ran the Comp and Vanakken for a day or two and it would run fine down the road, but after full throttle runs he would have an iratic idle. jumping up and down around 1000 RPM. His thoughts were possibly that it had something to do with the injection pump since he is running a stock fueling system and his fuel pressure would practically drop to zero when giving it full throttle. I havne't seen to many guys running the comp/vanaaken combo. So as far as your engine grenading i dont know if thats an accurate statement. My brother is currently running the superchips/comp together and really likes it. Probably the way to go. I know the thought of a triple stack sounds sweet. It might just be a little to much.

I'm new to the diesel world so my question may seem sutpid but what do you think of the hypertech tuner by its self? My truck has no mods and I tow a 5th wheel at about 8000#.

dont forget they claim 75HP, but thats probably at the crank, it may well be dropped to 30some at the rear wheels.

A word of caution, If you tow do not use the max setting without an EGT gauge and I strongly recommend a boost fooler.

On the max setting and towing the EGT's Might get too high and melt down your pistons.

An Edge EZ makes power so much more efficiently though.

More MPG, 60RWHP, and lower EGT's.

Unlike the SuperChips tuner that is making 40RWHP on the "hot" setting, raising EGT's, not changing MPG, and doesn't allow you to run more boost to support the extra fuel.
