More ? on air filters
More ? on air filters
Here we go again. I was at the Oregon Logging Confrence today and the guys at Oregon Fuel Injection said, they never heard of the scotty 2 air filter. So I tried to explain it to them and they replied back that the AFE air charger filter kit matches that pretty well. For some reason I dont think they know what there talking about? I need some help, on the Scotty 2 cold air induction filter if you cut a 4.5 inch hole in the end you'll get more of a cold air charge? How does this filter mount? I went to the Wildcat Diesel site and I cant even read any of the word on the web page its like a light shadow on the screen, but any other site the screen is normal.
Any words of wisdom would help. ;D
Re:More ? on air filters
This is what really amazes me...the folks that do not know about the Scotty System or have not tried it...say it does not work or 'other' systems work just as good. Just like what you experienced. Maybe I should get more awareness out there.
How do they know that? I offered up my system to a company in the USA to test against a few others and they declined...perhaps because they had their own in there and guess what...theirs came out on top...go figure.
Then theres the folks that will work diligently to reverse engineer this product. To date there has been four individuals and three corporations that have done this. A couple of the individuals frequent this site. When Joe D did his testing of air filters he never tested the Scotty for the TDR write-up. Wonder why? I know.
I looked at launching a huge promotion of the product and decided against it. After getting through the manufacturing hurdles of terrible manufacturers and then seeing the 3rd gen Ram coming, I decided to focus on keeping 'my' products as effective as they are and even better.
I was just on the site and it is working fine. Use the link that Shovelhead posted and it will take you to the page.
Hope this sheds some light.
Sorry to get off the topic a bit. I get a bit annoyed at the assumptions and ignorance of folks that draw conclusions about what works and does not without ever trying it.
I need another coffee.

Mines on the way ;D ;D ;D Can't wait to cut the hole and listen to the turbo. I'm glad the CTD sounds so good, cause the Dodge speakers suck! By the way does the filter in the Scotty come preoiled cause I think I forgot to order the oil from Rod. What oil can I use, what about the air cleaner oil for my Sthil 044? Jake

Rod can get you the recharge cleaning and oiling kit too.
Dunno bout the 044 air claner oil.

Re:More ? on air filters
Hey Griz!

As Scotty put it, I get a charge out of these guys who have never used the system, yet swear up and down that it couldn't possibly work.

I recently posted the following on another forum. Give it a read:

"A Cummins turbo diesel is a large air pump. Its only going to ask for X cfm of air, and indeed thats all it can take. So when choosing an air filter, you simply need one that will allow the flow that the engine/turbocharger is asking of it, and that will provide ample filtration. If the engine/turbo combination is requesting 700 cfm, it doesn't matter if you have a filter that can pass 1100 cfm or 1400 cfm. In other words, bench flow testing at X inches of water is of limited usefulness when choosing an air system.

The aFe cone filters have repeatedly proven themselves capable of passing as much air as our Cummins asks for, while maintaining very good filtration capabilities.

When adding an air system to your Cummins, you need to keep one thing in mind: Exhaust gas temperature reduction. This is what is truly important.

The filter selection is not the be all and end all when determining how effective your air system will be at reducing EGTs. Where the air is taken from, and hows its shaped around the filter and directed through the filter is, in my mind, more important than bench flow rates.

What is the ideal air system design? First, the system should grab air from outside the vehicle, or at the very least, the filter element should be shielded from the heated air under the hood of the vehicle. A common rule of thumb is that for every 1 degree reduction in intake air temperature (into the cylinders, not at the filter), you will see a corresponding 3 degree reduction in exhaust gas temperatures. The cooler the air heading into the charge air cooler, the cooler it will be as it leaves. Our testing (and independent testing) has shown us that outside air temp can be as much as 60 degrees cooler than underhood temps while at highway speeds.

Second, the air system design should allow for positive pressure to "push" the air through the filter vis-a-via, 1960s ram-air. I believe this is an under-rated factor when designing air systems. The less work the turbocharger/engine has to do to get air, the longer it will remain efficient.

Third, the system should allow for easy flow through it. Turbulent air will only reduce the effectiveness of the system. This is where internal velocity stacks and rounded housings come into play.

So how do you determine how effective your air system is? Static dyno runs without air movement past the vehicle are of limited usefulness. Sitting on a dyno, in a closed room, even with a fan blowing on the vehicle is not going to give you the airflow that is required. With air systems, the proof is in the pudding. Hook your modified truck to a heavy trailer, and hit the highway at 50 mph. Get some air flowing past the vehicle. Hot rod it. If your EGTs are lower than they were before you installed the air system, its doing its job. If the exhaust gas temps come up slower than they did before, the system is doing its job."

Hope this gives you some better insite, and of course, if you've got any questions don't hesitate to ask away...

Rod
Re:More ? on air filters
Excellent description Rod! ...and don't worry Scotty. I won't buy a knockoff....only the original CoooOOOoool air will do. It's been on my wish list about as long as I've been frequenting this site.

-SFB
