Interesting test on aftermarket air filters and stock filters
This is the website guys with bar graphs and I kinda wondering about this stuff and how much dirt is really getting through. I have only noticed more turbo whistle with my amsoil cone filter and afe intake tube nothing really other than that. I did notice my mileage drop off with the intake for some reason and higher temps while towing and not. I am thinking about puting on the stock intake to test it out. That is a really interesting study! Many good points are made about airflow of MOST diesels and that is most don't see a high enough RPM for a more free flowing filter to make much of a difference. Filtration is ESSENTIAL in diesels, especially turbo charged applications because it takes about 5 grams of fine dust to kill a turbo. Keeping the dirt out is the most important thing. Not only that but the OEM filter was restricted by just a few percentage points more than the others, again making little difference in our engines.

Yea I thoght the write up was awesome. I have seen that my oil is dirtier quicker and a little loss of mpg with the amsoil vs the stock intake. I am rethinking this know.

This had been around for a while. Remember, this test was run on a "drop-in" style/facotry replacement air filter. They had no other air box mods. The engineers spent a long time engeneering a good filter and accounted for all the trade offs. The aftermarket total replacement system has a larger surface area allowing for more dirt but, much larger airflow.

I would not expect anything to change. As an example, Fram has been selling crappy oil filters for decades despite the negative laboratory results. Heavy advertising and snappy posters will sell anything.

That was interesting reading....I look at it this way. Unless your racing your truck or into big time mods why spend the money. Unless you have money to burn on the plastic intake tube & air filters that sells for over $200.00 &up.
Any filter that you can hole up to the light and see tiny holes which light is coming through such as some of the after market filters can't be good for your motor. The next time your at the auto parts store take a K&N filter out of the box and hold it up to the light. It will look like it has a bunch of tiny stars glowing through it. Which looks like tiny pin holes letting light through. I'll stay with the stock Fleetguard Filter for now...At least I don't worry about traveling dirt roads......

testing your oil samples is the real truth behind air filters. If the dirt is getting in then your results will show. Doesn't matter what brand you run it all boils down to what is getting in the motor at time of oil sample.
