Which Manual trans

I am doing a 12 valve cummins conversion on a crew cab pherd. It will be my daily driver that rarely will tow a load and if so maybe 10,000lbs at the most. I am shooting for 500HP and I want a trans that I can have fun with meaning stop light to stop light, passing lane, and freeway entrance ramps, ect. Is the 4500 or 5600 better for this. I can get a 5600 for around $2400. I can get a 4500 for $1500 but then I have to upgrade the input shaft and might as well do the updated main shaft and 5th gear nut. I really dont mind shifting but is the 5600 a lot slower than the 4500?? I dont want to have all that power and not go anywhere fast because I'm always shifting the thing. For the 5600 guys, can you shift 2,4,6 or 3,5,6 to speed things up?? Never driven a 5600 so I dont know. Thanks for the help!

If you are looking for speed, go with an auto. I have a 5600 in my truck and 4500 in my jeep. Both resist high speed shifting. Picture trying to drag race with a trans thats in a semi and you will start to get the idea.

Good luck, sounds like a great project.

The 5600 does not shift as easily as the 4500. The 4500 does not like to be hurried, but it does OK. The 5600 shifts like a medium duty truck trans, if you rush it, it'll dang near break your wrist when the shifter kicks back. For good results in a drag race you must start in 3rd with either trans, which isn't doing the clutch any favors. If you have to have a stick (I know I do), get the 4500. If you want to beat up on the ricers at stoplights, you are better off with a built automatic.

Whatever you do put a Cummins sticker on the outside. That way the tow trucks will stop following.

If your 4500 is set up right you can shift it dang fast. To go into third quickly, just use a flat palm on the shifter and push straight forward. The shifter centers itseft perfectly. I can row mine just as well as I could my old Hemi Road Runner with the A-833!
