I have never had a problem with the hernia. I have always lifted things in the comfort zone. I feel it and lift. On the jobs I have been on ( construction) I was called the human crane. I did the lifts right, always check your body before you lift. Side note being called the human crane can make you do stupid things, keep your mind in the right place as you would your body.

Glad i did not. it sure was not going to get any better. i have not recovered as quick as some of you. i was able to drive in about 4 days and put a full day behind the wheel Thurs. Dcot. said nothing over 10 lbs. for 3 weeks. i'm gonna stick to that. I do plan on hauling a few hundred miles in a week or so. It's coming along nicely.
Can't wait to see the bill.

I had an umbilical hernia above the belly button in 2001; they just lopped off the gruk that was sticking out and sewed up the gap. Then in 2007, it really blew out (same place- felt like I'd ejected my gutpile through a hole the size of a bottlecap) and they had to put a big chunk of screen to contain the emmigrating organs. Doc said I'll have to find a new place to squirt the intestines out of next time.

..lol..I know how he feels!! This is kind of why I posted in the frist place..( The other is because..We have cabin fever!! winter tooo long here ) To encourage anyone else who put it off..to just Git-R-done..I waited over 10 years & the injury got larger (P.S. It doesn't go away) to the size of a tennis ball bulge..(after surgery Dr said it was huge..took about 6" incision) & was preventing me from some activitys.. There is a "Measure" of risk/danger in not repairing it my Dr informed me..what I just did here was "Copy & Paste" the risk from the Meyo clinnic website- .. and on a side note.. It also looks like "Others" were bored at the same time as I was. The Hyena & Herina discussion..lol
-anyway here is the Meyo clinic risk, info-& their site:

When to seek medical advice
See your doctor if you have a painful or noticeable bulge in the area on either side of your pubic bone. The bulge is likely to be more noticeable when you're standing upright, and you usually can feel it if you put your hand directly over the affected area.

You should be able to gently and easily push the hernia back into your abdomen when you're lying down. If not, applying an ice pack to the area may reduce the swelling enough so that the hernia slides in easily. Lying on a slant with your pelvis higher than your head also may help.

If you still aren't able to push the hernia in, the herniated intestine may have become trapped (incarcerated) in the abdominal wall — a serious condition that may require immediate medical attention. This condition may be accompanied by nausea, vomiting or a fever and a hernia that turns red, purple or dark. If any of these signs or symptoms occur, call your doctor right away.

Diagnosed with a bilateral inguinal hernia last year, doctor said as long as it's not bothering me to not worry about it. He said they are quite common and as long as I'm careful shouldn't cause me any problems.

I'd consider myself an expert on this subject. I've had this surgery 5 times. Yes, I said five. My first one came when I was a kid. Lived with it along time. This and one other thing made me a canidate for a repeat. Besides get it fixed as soon as you can, you also need to be careful with the doctor ayou choose and what procedures he/she will use. Never let them talk you into pulling your other muscles down to make a patch. I didn't know any better. used the same doctor my FIL used to get his fixed. It felt like the guy sewed my belly to my thighs. It took about 8 weeks till I could lay flat. About 6 months later, i could feel something wasn't right. Went back and he said he needed to go in and repair it again. So I let him. About a month after the second surgery, i could tell that things wern't right again. At least this time, I decided to get a visit with a diffrent doctor.

This doctor was highly recomended by certain people that I know at the hospital surgery dept. I let him do the third repair. Once in there, he decided to only fix one side. In the follow up visit, he told me that my previous repairs were a butcher job, and he took some pics in case I'd ever considered taking the first doctor to court.

He had to go back in one more time just to repair some damage, let that heal, then go back one more to fix it all correctly. I now basicaly have a giant mesh trash bag, that starts by being staples to my back muscles, wrapping around holding everutihing, then it's stapled to my belly muscles.

Long and deep story, but as said, get it fixed by a good doctor. Check his success records. Ask hospital staff that are willing to talk about his success or failures.
