Gasser rebuild 5.2?

I have a 5.2L durango 1998. 123K miles. How much would a rebuild be. Right now It leaks Anti-freeze and just needs a basic rebuild. My wife wasw looking at new cars but has made her mind up that she really loves her little truck as she calls it.

Or would I be better off finding a junk yard 5.9L gas rebuilding that and throwing that in? What would be involved in that.

You should be able to find a long block for about $1100.

At that low of miles it really shouldn't need a full rebuild. where is the anti-freeze leaking from the head gaskets?

I dont know. I am hoping its leaking from the plenum or exhaust manifold. Ifit is a head gasket I'll get a couple of heads rebuilt. Now I just need to figure out why its using up oil

if its using lots of oil and water is disappearing, id be willing to bet your belly pan gasket is the culprit. very common problem on those years.......

This is from experience. Pull the exhaust manifolds and valvecovers. Now, retoque those head bolts.
I did on a magnum engine that was loosing antifreeze at the head. Several head bolts were almost finger tight!!! It sealed it up and it is still used. 300,000 miles on it.

if you have the means of doing this yourself then i would suggest getting a rebuild kit. i'm sure you can find one on the net for under 700. even cheaper if you dont need bearings. i'd stay away from throwing in a 5.9 unless you can get the computer and wiring harness for it too, but you might have to rebuild that one too. good luck
