It was bound to happen. Out of 250,000 plus with our diverse culture? Apparently he was experiencing some anxiety over being disciplined for some infraction of conduct. In 'Nam we called this "fragging".

~Dave

And now 11 US soldiers have been captured by the enemy. Supposedly they are maintenance personnel who may have taken a wrong turn.

I really hate to hear about that.

PISTOL

Re:Disturbing news from the Sandbox
I hate to mention the facts here,,,,We are in a war, bad things happen to good people, the enemy DOES shoot back, the enemy MAY NOT play by the rules of the Geneva convention. Some of the images non-military people will see is gonna make their stomachs turn. Pray for our boys, may they shoot straight, move quickly and may thunder reside in their right hand.

Personally I would like to smack whoever made our soldiers believe Iraq would be a pushover and that we would just walk in and take the country over.
Re:Disturbing news from the Sandbox
I heard a report today about the POWs that the Iraqis hold. One of the comments was about the enemy not following international law by publishing pictures. Just what did the media expect? With Sadam's track record, I would expect nothing else. It would give me more resolve to get rid of the "problem". I truly believe that it does for our troops what it does for me. I just hope and pray that we have very limited casulties in this war. No, I do not want to see many Iraqi people killed either. I do wish for a quick victory but again the media keeps harping on a "long and tedious engagement".
I wonder how many more will snap under the pressure that the soldiers are under.
Tom
Re:Disturbing news from the Sandbox
Just heard this afternoon that the 12 US soldiers captured today stopped to "Capture" some Iraqi soldiers who were "Surrendering" when they were ambushed. >
So much for White Flags........... shoot 'em all, let God sort 'em out.

I don't understand something ... I hear that to show our people as POW's is against the Geneva Convention, but haven't we shown their people on TV as well ?

Granted, we haven't murdered them and then show a close-up of them for the world to see, but where is the line drawn ?

PISTOL
Re:Disturbing news from the Sandbox
According to the Geneva convention, film footage of POW's is ok...but public humiliation or degration is a big NO-NO.

That guy that snapped at camp Penn. He was a recent convert to Muslim? With a name like Ali Akbar...you'd think his superiors wouldv'e thought something was amiss? :

Re:Disturbing news from the Sandbox
Dave the news people have a bad time of makeing things more than they are. do you really think a small pocket of lets say 100-300 troops could stop the american forces of probably 2k-7k troops. What I see is our troops takeing it really easy so that the news people have no proof to say that we should not be in this war, or make up other things like that.
DM01

Re:Disturbing news from the Sandbox
First, the fact that American soldiers are being killed or captured in a war shouldn't surprise anyone, even journalists, especially since recon forces are closing in on the river crossings and Baghdad, and Iraqi forces have overcome initial shock and are engaged in recovering actions. I hear journalists say "the war is not going well today" but then their assessment is based on "hard fighting". :
what did they expect? We expect war to be too easy & cheap today.

Second, if there's something to be concerned about, it's that we put far less forces in this war than in '91, both because of political situation with Turkey and because of evaluation of Iraqi military. Right now we have a Marine Expeditionary Force, Third Infantry, and 101st Airborne, plus support troops. No large heavy armor formations at all! They're supposed to come later when Fourth division transits the Suez and the Gulf, and other forces are brought in by sea to captured Iraqi ports in the south. So we're fighting without our best open-country high-mileage units. A calculated risk, and one that may or may not pay off, it might have been better to wait a month and resolve this with armor, but they thought air power would make up for it, plus didn't have heavy Iraqi armor to fight anymore after '91. Maybe not appropriate to second guess leadership, Still, that's a big part of explanation why things are slower & more difficult now.

ascraeus
