Does History Repeat Itself?

Something terrible is happening in the land of wooden shoes, windmills, Rembrandt and wonderful breakfasts.
A Dutch hospital is euthanizing — killing — newborn babies who don't measure up to an arbitrary standard set by the hospital. The hospital at first requested guidelines for so-called "mercy killings" of newborns. It then revealed it has been engaging in the practice without any guidelines at all. Three years after the Dutch parliament passed a law allowing doctors to actively kill patients they deemed terminally ill, in great pain and with no prospects for recovery, it has come to this. At least with the elderly sick, they had to be consulted about their wishes. Newborns receive no such privilege.
I'm not surprised.
Once a single category of life is declassified as having no intrinsic value and a right to life, it is a very short step to declassify other categories when they are considered inconvenient, or burdensome.
Holland is a perfect example of what happens when there is no governing moral standard. The Dutch have decriminalized most drugs and people smoke dope openly in venues set aside for the practice. Prostitutes display their wares like mannequins in department store windows. And now we have at least one hospital murdering already born babies because someone has decreed them unworthy of life.
If ever there was a slippery slope to be studied, this is it.
The Dutch are now grappling with their open border policy. They have admitted thousands of radical Islamists who have not assimilated and are threatening the stability of the nation. A Dutch filmmaker (search) was murdered last month by a radical who didn't like a film he made criticizing Islam's treatment of women.
And now we have the killing of newborns. All of this in a country where the ***** murdered Ann Frank just because she was Jewish and therefore less than human.
Does history repeat? In Holland, apparently it does.

I saw the article last week.
This is the country, whose doctors refused to supply the occupying ***** with the names of Jewish citizens for their "cleansing process."
Didn't we prosecute, at Nuremberg, those doctors and attendants who participated in those gastly crimes against humanity?
Gee, I wonder if any of Hermann Goering's children live in Amsterdam?
The "doctors committee" is a group who decides who lives and dies. If you're an invalid, have CP, ALS, or any other of myriad of diseases, you're at risk from being "eliminated" from society.
Murder is still murder, no matter what you call it!

Troubling to say the least
I often find myself reflecting on just how far we have evolved in the last 50 years, in terms of technology we have moved forward dramatically. In terms of human behavior we seem to be slipping backward at an alarming rate.
I know this gets beat to death, but frankly I blame the parents of these now young adults for not teaching them any moral values, and it will only get worse as the next bunch mature "immaturely"
People are not born with a gene that makes them apparently (dumb as a sack of hammers) they are taught to be that way or more precisely ( not taught anything of moral values or convictions) these days.
You don't have to be a strict religious zealot to simply teach your children the golden rule, parents.....PLEASE teach your children to value something other than money!!!

Nice OpEd, but doesn't state the facts.
What is happening is after consulting with the parents AND after the parents give the OK, newborns who have absolutely no chance of survival and are in great pain can be euthanised. There's no "arbitrary" about it, and it's only after the parents give their consent.
Examples of this would be: Extremely premature births, where children suffer brain damage from bleeding and convulsions; and diseases where a child could only survive on life support for the rest of its life, such as severe cases of spina bifida and epidermosis bullosa, a rare blistering illness.

Man, why arent all the liberals up in arm's about this? Some American takes some "degrading" pix of a few iraqi prisoners and they are coming out of the woodwork. Some europeans are practicing genocide and they cant be found with a search warrant......

What is genocide? Killing someone you don't want around you? I see many things wrong with being able to pick out who you want to die. I see this going bad places: not blonde headed kill it, Not a boy kill it, not a girl kill it, it's feet are turned in kill it, who do we think we are to do God's job?
I've got a friend with Non- Hodgkins Lynmph. The doctors checked his bone marrow and said he had only a 10% chance of ever recovering. 6 months later it's gone?????? Should they have said "hell he's going to die anyway? Why don't we just speed it up"
These are the same people that are all for killing babies so they can use their stem cells for research? I'm sorry for ranting but I just don't understand people anymore.

I resemble the remark of genozide. Genozide is defined by killing people because they belong to an ethnic group with the goal to eliminate this ethnic group. If you kill less than the growth rate of the group in a certain amount of time it isn't genozide.
I just wanted to clear this up, in no way I do state that this is right to do so.
But being realistic it's very difficult to say where the borders are in these discussions. Is it killing a person if the relatives decide to turn off the life supporting machines? Does it depend on the chances of recovery and if so which percentage is acceptable? Is the administration of an amount of pain killers that will shorten the life span of a human being acceptable?
I think that this trend now is just a way of trying to cope with these issues. It isn't a black and white decision, I feel it's shades of grey. I do believe that actions as those have been done by many doctors for a long time. Now the Dutch start to discuss that in the open. I must say that the decision to make this public needs a lot of courage.

Thank you for reporting accurately what the story really was about.

A voluntary decision to end one's life is one matter, it's the involuntary decisions that are causing the most concern.

This may be an example of what free and open use of drugs really do to a society. The babies probably have a high rate of deformaties or problems due to the parents using so many drugs continuously. The next point to look at is the open decision to just euthanize the deformed , only people on drugs could rationalize that one. Most of the illeagal drugs are mind altering and I think this is an example of it.
