disturbing find

hey everyone.
I just checked the oil in the truck this mornin and noticed some peices of metal. Once you crank it , they make there way in the filter. Has anyone had that experience? I'm wondering if its not from the valve train or fuel pump. im not getting any unusal bottom end sound or low oil psi?
any thoughts
thanks luie

If there are metal flakes on the dipstick, your motor is in bad shape. Glittery oil means something's coming apart in there. :'(

Re:disturbing find

thanks for the reply, i may take it to cummins and have it built. The thing is , its not glittery, its almost as if theres been a few small peices, like, small, but not fine shavings. I had considerd the thought that maybe when the old hx-35 went out a few peices got loose and are floating. It's not metal though, it wont attract to a magnet. I figure if bearings were starting to fly it would knock or loose oil psi. thats why i thought it might be somthing in the valves (since some dummie hasnt had it adjusted, and its never been adjusted at 65,000 : ) i dont have any real unusal blow bye. I was just wondering if ya'll had thoughts on what it might be coming apart!
thanks

Big chunks are bad news, too. If it's non-magnetic, it could be off a bearing, or it could be pieces of the timing cover due to a gear developing excessive endplay. Whatever this is, it isn't good.

I would get an oil anaylsis done before you take any action. There are several oil analysis companies out there. Blackstone is one that I have used in the past. They will send you a sample kit so all you have to do is grab a sample and mail it in.
They can tell you if there is a problem and where that problems could be.

Re:disturbing find

I don't know about anyone else, but if I pulled my dip stick and found shavings of metal on it, I'd be very disturbed. Actually I think after I cleaned out my shorts, I have to lay back down.
