Crash and broken femur

My GF and I were in a pretty nasty crash the Sunday before Halloween. I was in my red 94 S-10 and it is destroyed.

We were heading to my cousin's father in laws funeral and on the way this guy in a 2nd gen 1500 Quad Cab 4x4 comes over into our lane and hits us head on. They determined that the guy has medical problems and blacks out while driving!

Anyway the GF ended up with a couple broke ribs and I got a broke femur and kneecap. Her side got the least amount of damage as I had moved over as far as I could to the right. I stayed awake and alert throughout the experience and didn't get any medication until the flight nurse gave me some morphine equivalent right before I was pulled free for my helicopter ride.

The rescue bunch was great, I can't thank them enough. I knew about 3 or 4 of the EMT's and about 3 or 4 of the LEO's there.

Right now I'm outta work for about 8 weeks and am just trying to get by. The pain is pretty rough at times and getting around isn't fun at all. Worst part I can't drive my Ram and it'll be a little while before I can push the clutch in I would say.

So any members here had a broke femur? How long was your recovery time, any significant milestones you remember (like the pain really eased off around such a time)? Any tips for what to do as far as getting around? I'm doing some knee flexes and such that seem to help but everythings still pretty painful but I guess thats expected as right now I'm only 12 days into it.

Sorry to hear about your accident but thankfully you and the GF are alive to tell about it. I have had quite a few friend with those type of injuries and as far as healing it all depends on your will power and determination but just don't rush it. You will heal plenty fast as long as you let yourself meaning TAKE IT EASY. Now you have plenty of time to cruise the site and help out where and when you can. Last year I had a collapsed lung and I wasn't aloud to walk far or drive, this site kept me sain and I learned allot that I was able to pass on.

Hope your healing process goes quick, Best of luck.

Ryan

Sorry to hear about your accident but like mentioned earlier, you and the GF are very lucky. On top of it all, what if he had been driving a truck like your's!

I'll sure trust a corpsman!

Thanks for the tips and all the well wishes. I just got a machine today that works the knee and leg for as long as I can stand it. Its supposed to greatly speed healing time and help with flexibility. I've used it for about 3 hrs today and will try to get the suggested 6 hrs tomorrow. It looks promising as the little stretching I was able to do before helped a lot.

You should be up pretty quick if they put a pin in. If they didn't "d get a 2nd opinion. Take your motrin when your suppose to to keep the inflamation down. Ice bags work great too if you haven't figured it out yet. If you try to touph out the pain, your body will make hormones that hinder the healing process.

Sorry to hear about your accident. Wish you and your GF a speedy recovery.

I spiral fractured both lower leg bones and broke my ankle. I was out of the cast in 18 days after falling into a river while trying to earn extra money. Insolvency is hard to fight on one leg.

yea get well soon, wish you two a speedy recovery.

this is one of the reasons i drive the cummins everyday, and spend 3.50 a gallon and get 17 mpg. no economy car for me, i'll take my safety first.

If you were driving your cummins at the time that 1500 would be in worse shape right now and you possibly could have walked away from it all.

2500+ > 1500

I always hate thinking about the "what ifs" because you cannot rewind time, but just my opinion on the subject.

oh ya, go by a lottery ticket.
head on collisions are usually never good,
and i wouldnt say this one worked out good,
but its way better than what it could have been.
