something burning...........wiring?
something burning...........wiring?
Well after putting on 10,000 miles sense leaving Canada in July of this year I pulled into Milford Pa. last night where I was in the process of parking the 5th wheel so I turned my four way flashers on and shortly after that I smelled something burning like wiring, so I turned the flashers off. Now before I take it to the Dodge Boys I thought I would run this by the forum and see if anyone out there has had this problem before. I opened the hood and could not smell anything burning outside the truck, just inside,
I was wondering why it didn't blow a fuse, or dim the lights, because it was dark, and I had all my lights on. But the lights did not dim, the voltage gage did not drop, it stayed right on 14v or there about. Nothing indicated a short, but something was sure burning the smell was strong.
Well maybe not burning, but getting to the melting point.
I have a 1995, auto. Oh Sick

Check the lite blue plastic flasher, when they get old and used alot they melt. on the 95s the often had an upgrade on thw flasher, also check the plug it self.
Danny
Re:something burning...........wiring?
Did you happen to dim the instrument panel lights? If you turn down the lights, that dimmer drops all of the voltage across the reostat, and the varnish on the windings will burn off and stink.

OhSick:
Good to hear from you and that everything is going well on your trek. I third the suggestion about the headlight switch, especially since you had just been driving in the dark. The switches on the '94-5 would fry if you drove them for any distance, especially with the dashlights dimmed.
DC tried namy fixes, and finally came up with a heavy duty wiring harness. if you have not yet had the fix, it is time.

I put in three switches before DC would admit a problem. I finally fixed mine by adding a relay...that helped, but didn't do the trick completely.

IMHO, DC has still not really found the problem. I think that the trouble is that the rheostat for the dash lights gets too hot after an extended trip, and it fries the front two contacts on the switch, which happen to be the running lights.

Good luck, and I hope that you continue to have a great QUEST!
george

Hi Smokey,
Its always nice to hear from you. but you know I feel bad that with all the side trips I made once I got to KY I never did around to your place. I wanted to see Eddie but didn't manage that ether. The one thing I did set my mind to do was to make a apt with Tom at Black Mountan Diesel and have him fix the KDP on my truck, and while he was doing that I spent the morning playing with Dixie.
So far I have no complants with my 95 auto 4X2 It doesn't have any trouble pulling the 30' 5er down the road at 70 to 75 and I even have to back off to keep it going up to 80 at times, which by the way..........puts my wife on pins and neddles.
"Over look the spelling"
One of these days will get down your way and will stop in. We are here in Milford Pa at our daughters home and will be here till around Jan 20th 03, at which time we will hit the road again. thanks for the tip will look into it, And I thank everyone else for there tips as well.
