White Smoke?

it's been pretty cold over here (30's) & when I started my truck up today there was a noticable abount of steady white smoke coming from the exhaust & after driving it about 10 miles & stopped it was all clear, then when I was at my grandparents I was there for about 2 hours came back out & started it up & same thing my own little cloud, but went away after I drove it for about 10 min's again, the only mod I have right now is a K&N E-1796 (Round) air filter. also if you read dona few posts you will see about my lift pump replacment problem, so I ended putting the old one back on. but I never had white smoke before even starting @ around 15* not plugged in.

DRecu!

Re:White Smoke?

dan, i get white smoke for 1-2 minutes on cold mornings until the grid heaters warm up the fuel enough to keep it from doing so. on a 0* morning, it'll do it for 5 minutes or so.

Tom

Re:White Smoke?

I get a big puff right at startup, then a little haze for about a minute, but never seen 10 minutes of it, not even when I forget to plug it in.

phox

Re:White Smoke?

Normal situation for cold starts. Engine temp needs to be up in order to get a good fuel burn. The white smoke is associated with unburn fuel going out the tail pipe due to cylinder temps being too cool.

Jerry

Re:White Smoke?

There is a freightliner in our fleet that has a cummins that smokes so bad even in the hot hot summer. This trucker told me one day that this particular cummins engine(don't know which one) casting is so thick it takes forever to get up to operating temperature and this thing is awful! Winter is excrutiatingly embarassing! You should see our volvo generators (low compression engines) with no intake heaters. These are 2x as bad as the freightshakers. ;D ;D ;D

Drecu:
If you think that the situation is new, check to make sure that the grid heaters are cycling properly. They are supposed to keep coming on until things are warm.
george

Re:White Smoke?

The grid heaters will only cycle on and off for a certain amount of time. They will also cycle off comepletely if you drive the truck over 25 mph before the cycle is completed.
You can tell the heaters are working, just watch the volts on your dash gauge or watch the lights on the truck...thos things take some serious power. You should see the white smoke after a night of sitting in -45F and not plugged in.
Someone took my cord that night at a friends place and it took three 'wait to start' cycles before I could get it to CHUG some smoke and fire.

Re:White Smoke?

I'm up in Alberta from FL and the first 25F snap allowed me to gas the entire neighborhood. It gets worse at -10F ;D

The local Cummins mechanic tells me he times his P7100 on the 12 valve TWO additional degrees to what the specs say with good results. I have not had chance to do so, but it makes sense. A pump mistime would not be apparant in Florida temperatures.

From what i read, fuel pressure is more critical at cold temps. This also makes sense. At 30F and below, even the local winter diesel must flow like good ole maple syrup. So, knowing the lift pumps in both 2nd generation motors are troublesome anywhere after 50k miles, a fuel pressure gauge is next for me.

Then comes a check of the diesel pump return valve setup, pressure flow of the priming pump, a timing of the pump, and finally a pop off pressure test of the injectors.

Also make sure your fuel pre-heater is working. A PITA to get to.

Re:White Smoke?

White and/or blue smoke is almost always timing related.
Have the timing bumped up and you will see a decrease in the smoke. There will always be a bit when you're dealing with cold weather starts.

Bob.
