Put a compressor on and use an air starter.

Pre 1950, I guess before the bendix was invented, there was pedal at the far left that when pressed physically moved the starter gear into the flywheel ring gear and switched on power to the starter motor.
This was a step above hand crank starting.

Heard it said that the invention of the electric starter and automatic transmission made our roads less safe because they allowed women to drive.

My dad has several 53 and 54 chevy trucks, they have a starter pedal to the right of the gas pedal. Turn the key on and step on the pedal to crank it.

Head down to your local Mack dealer and ask for one. You will have t get a good parts man to look it up without a chassis number, or if you would like I will get a chassis number last time I see on with it. Mack used a nice heavy duty push button that was surrounded by a nice chrome ring that sticks out farther than the button does so you cant accidentally push it. you have to stick your finger in the hole to push the button.

I have driven a few old R-models with air-starters.

Man, you talk about something whirling over an engine.

You better not have any air leaks, though; or, you won't have any air to start with.

That sure is an un-forgetable sound when you hit the air-starter.
