Lift pump?

I'm a new cummins owner ;D so bear with me. What is a lift pump andwhere is it? I know it's some sort of fuel pump that everyone says goes out prematurely and is a headache. What sort of pressures would indicate it is going out?

Re:Lift pump?

well from my understanding, it is right outside the fuel tank on the rail. Pressure. Well if you have a fuel pressure gauge you will see that at idle it can vary from 13psi to 18. At wot it shouldnt dip below 5 I think. Someone else will put you straight, but this gives you an idea. If you dont have a gauge, then get one fast. Friendly advice.

Re:Lift pump?

Well, how educated do you want to get? You can do a search and you'll have about 4 days of reading on the subject of lift pumps. : :'(

I can tell you were it is located. It's sits on the drivers side of the engine block right under and to the right of the fuel filter. You can take the inlet fuel line to the fuel filter and trace it down to the lift/transfer pump. Fuel pressure should be 13psi to 18psi at idle and at WOT (wide open throttle) should drop no lower than 8psi. If it's lower than 8psi you need a new lift pump.

If you would like a good test gauge you can get one here. Black Mountain Diesel The gauge is called the Briar Hopper test gauge and works great to test your fuel pressure if you don't want to mount a permanet gauge.

DB

Re:Lift pump?

Well if its bound to go out on the 03's like they have in the past I guess I should upgrade. Sounds like its a simple bolt on job. Expensive? Should I wait?

Re:Lift pump?

Yep, the 03's have changed the pump location and type. Its bolted right on the side of the fuel filter canister now and will deliver 9.5 PSI at idle (at the injection pump. 11.5 at the lift pump according to the FSM), 8.5 at cruise, and 5 at WOT. As far as I know, there are no lift pump upgrades available as of yet, but it won't take much to switch the system over to a Holley (or other) remote mount transfer pump.

Rod

Push Rod,
Is it still a Carter, like the older ones? Have you heard anything about the reliability of it? Or will we need to have a source inside DC to find out early if these pumps are any better than the last ones?
I still can't believe the mounting location they chose. Maybe that's so people will associate with the engine instead of the body when it fails? (Just pullin BS out of my keyster at this point.)

Chris
I have my suspicions that its a Carter. And from talking to the boys at TST, I'm going to say that its less reliable than the old lift pump, at least with BOMBed trucks. My local Dodge mech will keep me up to date on stock trucks.

Rod
