Two Piece Fuel Filter?

Changed my filter (1st. time-10k) and when I turned the lid off of the canister the filter stayed put. The plastic filter top was attached to the lid but I had to pull the filter out. Is this normal? Small amount (1/2 spoon full) of stringy sludge in the bottom of canister that I assume is normal?
The local Cummins dealer has only 10 micron filters. Parts guy says thats all that is available. I guess I'll order on-line next time to get the 7.

The plastic top of the filter should have stayed on the paper part. Sounds like that filter could have contaminated your fuel system by inproper filtration. The good part is if your truck is running fine there should be nothing to worry about. The stringy stuff at the bottom could be water with bacteria in it. Drain your fuel filter more often to remove this stuff. Try to find which fuel station gave you the contaminated fuel and buy some where else from now on.

The filter is a 1 piece unit, the end cap should not have departed the filter! Document what happened to the filter, keep it in a bag if you still have it. Sounds like the filter failed and you may have pump & injector problems in your future!

Thanks for the response. I assumed the filter was a problem but wanted to make sure. To late to save the old one, should I contact the dealer to have this info. on file or is that spitt'n in the wind?
Truck seems to run same as always-awesome!!

If the filter was the original one I would contact them about it and make sure it's documented as in have paper in your hand.

If the filter is one that you changed earlier, contacting the dealer could be setting yourself up for warranty denial later because the failed filter is the filter manufacturers responsability from that point on and not having the filter to prove it failed leaves you in a shaddy area.

The best way is with a wet/dry vacum. If the hose is too big shove a smaller pipe into it and duct tape it.

The best way to deal with the engine compartment fuel filter is to eliminate it.
Poor engineering by Mopar...messy and that o-ring is easy to pinch.
I had the fuel line cut under the frame, below the drivers seat, installed two petcocks, a spin on filter housing, and a Fleetguard FF105 filter. I can have it changed in less than a minute, no muss, no fuss. Now if only Dodge would make the oil filter easier to reach....
