Towing Advice

I am going to pick up a project wheeler (old CJ) and I am wondering how to tow it back. The previous owner already has a 2" tow bar in the front of the CJ.

I am wondering how the heck does the CJ go straight down the road behind my Dodge? Do I just tie the steering wheel straight? Seems if the alignment is out on the CJ it could cause a potential disaster on the road.

Any advice welcome.

Just hook it up and don't do any sharp turns. 180 turns will kill you. Well not really the jeep will try to follow and get all bound up. Other than that it just tracks right behind the truck. Good luck with the addiction, I have a CJ7 and a few others myself.

Lots of people tow that way. Just make sure you use the most important piece of equipment " your head" and you will be fine.

You'll do fine. Just don't forget the jeep is back there. You might not be able to see too much of it through your rear-view mirrors.

Yeah what he said. I towed a buddies car with my car years ago. We put a tie down strap on his steering wheel. Went around a pretty good curve and his car tried to go straight and we jack knifed! Popped part of my rear spoiler off, and did some damage to to the quarter panel.

What you are trying to do is called "Flat Towing"

I've flat towed several Jeeps behind my truck. You will need safety chains for the truck to the towbar and another set from the towbar to the jeep.

Unlock the steering in the Jeep. Put the Transfer case in the Jeep in Neutral and the trans in Park for an auto or Neutral for a manual.

You will need lights on the jeep connected to the lights on the truck

Here is a pretty good write-up on the subject

Yep

Keeps trans fluid moving in trans which it doesn't do in "N" while under tow. Don't ask me how. It even states that in my owners manual for a 95 YJ

I did forget to mention to Mr Slug

Unlock the front hubs on the Jeep (CJ-7)

Disconnect the rear driveshaft if the the trip in long

I thought maybe in gear...but park "locks" the drivetrain up, right?

I know, Sure doesn't sound right but that's what several "Old Timer" towers told me when I started a long while ago. Also states the same in my owners manual

Here is another write-up, same subject

Best bet is to disco both Driveshafts

YUP!

However, you should be able to use the transfer case neutral...'center disconnect'!

Others with first hand knowledge should chime in!

HTH

yes, t-case in neutral, transmission in park. If not done this way you will fry the tranny. otherwise pull both driveshafts and don't worry about a thing...
