It may be the head unit....I just installed the 6 disc and tried out the rear speakers only. They sound about half as loud/clear as they did with the single disc stock unit.

My 03 has similar problem with the infinity, but it is the front speakers that sound awful, and the back sounds great., I tried the pin switch, new speakers, and still no joy. also have no radio lights when key is in acc position.

does anyone know if there should be 2 plugs on back of the stereo? I can only find one and assume the amp plug is missing(if that is the top plug)

***Update***

Here is the latest on my Infinity problem. They (dealer) installed a new amp, there was problem with the connector when the new amp was plugged in, blew 2 front speakers. Connector fixed, new amp in, new speakers will be in today for the front doors. Aside from the blown front speakers, this looks promising. I'm getting more punch/sound out of the rear speakers now. I still don't think those little 5 1/4 speakers are adequate. Does anyone know if 6 1/2 will fit without cutting the doors, or other suggestions????

6 1/2" will fit in the rear doors......or at least they do in an 06 Mega cab. You can look at the crutchfield site, that may offer some more info.

yeah, changing around the speaker wires is a no no .
That will put your system out of phase.

I'm having an issue with upgrading the speakers on my REC Infinity equipped 07. I installed new Infinity 6x9's in the front doors (aftermarket Infinity Kappas), only to discover that the highs are filtered out of the door speakers, probably by the "amp" under the dash. Does the aforementioned bypass cable from Crutchfield correct this? Does the REC have its own built in amp that can drive speakers well enough? Also, would the dash speakers still be functional? (if not no biggie)

I'm replacing front and rear door speakers, and the rear speakers get full bandwidth but the front door speakers are apparently supposed to just be woofers, as evidenced by their construction. I almost regret getting the factory 7 speaker setup, but it was included in the "H" Laramie package.

I bought Infinity 6.5" "Reference" 2 way coax speakers for the rear doors. They are a thin profile for clearance and need a couple of holes drilled for install. I haven't put them in yet though.

You don't have to do any cutting. The holes in the doors are made for a 6 1/2" speaker. The factory uses an adapter plate to fit the smaller 5 1/4" speakers. I replaced the entire radio system in my truck, and all I did was simply remove the rear speakers / adapters and use metal screws to mount the new 6 1/2" to the rear door.
