I guess I should have said I went from the stock 265 Michelins to the 285 BFGs and lost 1-2 mpg on average (yes, I factor in the 4% difference in circumference when I calculate mileage). That extra width makes for more friction going down the road, and slightly extra lever arm requires more energy to pull away from a stop light. More friction may also come from softer compounds the BFGs might be made of.
The OEM 265 BFGs probably wouldn't hurt your mileage as bad, but look kind of smallish IMHO.
