Question 285 BFG vs 315 BFG

Hello everyone.... Another Newbie Here.

I am the current owner of a 02 F250 PSD - BUT am very seriously considering trading for a Dodge. My dealer has the one I want on the lot. It's a 2500 diesel Laramie 4x4 with just about everything. Sticker price is $45,810 (I will be paying 1% less than invoice though)

This question is on tire size (one of 3 questions). BFG AT KO will be what I put on here before I take it home. Does anyone have a problem with 315's. Per the BFG website, it states 8.5 wide wheel minimum and these are only 8 wide (unless I'm wrong). I will be towing ocassionally and do not want a tire coming off the wheel.

Does anyone have pictures of 285's on their truck?

Thanks for the help!

Hello again...The 315's will work fine with the 8" wheels. I had no rubs prior to the 2" leveling kit, and still have no rubs with it. Some have minor clearence issues at full lock, with the inside of the tire rubbing on the suspension arm. The 315's look good, but I would consider 4.10 gears if you plan on running them.

Sorry, no 285's here, but you can check my gallery for pics with the 315's.

Very very nice looking truck!

I think your wheels may look better then the dull aluminum on the Laramie.... What's the general opinion on the factory wheels??

Well, I'll chime in. My general opinion is the factory doesn't offer decent wheels.

The chrome wheels appear to have some sort of chromed skin pressed over the wheels. The mag wheels appear to have a dull gray powder coat on much of the surface. Somehow they have managed to make their most expensive wheel look cheap... They all come with crummy looking plastic center covers.

I think the new Alloy wheels look much better than the chrome over steel option. I bought a set for my 01. From what I have read the Alloy wheel has a clear coat over a brush Aluminum finish. I had this same finish on my 93 Dakota wheels. It was easy to keep clean and held up well.

I agree with Jeff, the center covers look lame. But they look better than the covers on my 01 wheels and the new ones look easier to keep clean.

I was going to buy 285s, but at the time, they cost almost twice what I paid for the 315s so my choice was easy. The 315s look great but you notice a difference in power..... Sorry, don't know about the 285s..

Zilla, you mention a notice in power, I take it that the big tires rob it. Is that right? I put 285's on mine and they appear to be holding well. I think I lost close to 1 mpg adding them. I'm basing that on my test drive, because I replaced them the day I took deleivery. But I am getting 17.3 back and forth to work everyday, 25 miles each way. I can live with that. I almost put the 315's on, but thought about it and put the 285's on.

Gono, whats the truck you're looking at have for tires right now? 265's? To me, there isn't that much difference between 265's and 285's, but you can see the diff when you go to 315's.

My next set will be 315's - but at the rate that mine are wearing, it may be another year or so.

Nonford,
When you go to 315s you basically change your gear ratio from 4:10s to 3:73s so that's the difference in bottom end power. You would think that that would give better mileage but I guess the rolling resistance of the wider tire negatively affects it more and I probably lost 1 mpg with the 315s.. I think the trucks look great with 315s. It makes it so the grill doesn't seem so big somehow...
