Intake horn questions

I am wondering if those that have replaced their stock intake horn ( I guess that's what you call the thing that your dip stick attaches to?) with the after market ones notice a drop in egt's, power, mileage, or anything to make it worth getting one. Especially the egt's!

its not going to make a big difference. there are mainly for looks and for the ports to spray NOS or water/meth. I have ran a few different ones and didnt care for the fitment on the banks or ats. they shove the dipstick up higher. I would reccomend the glacier or hellman they are best for the $ also

The only one I have experience with is the CFM+

I bought it thinking great things... left it off after so many here said it really didn't do anything... put it on after dyno tests said it did well... sorry I did after pics here showed one that blew up.. felt better after I found out it was a Ford...

Bottom line is that I noticed a substantial difference in low end power and in turbo spool... cruising egts were the same, WOT egts maybe slightly less.. couldn't really tell about mpg.

The main thing you are going to gain with the intake plenum is better throttle response. They are supposed to increase the amount of stored air available to be pushed into the engine.

You dont want the intake to flow any better. In a naturally aspirated motor the engine draws the air in, so you want it to flow as freely as possible. In a turbocharged engine you are working with static pressure between the turbo and the engine. An engine is only able to consume so much air. If you increase the flow with the manifold you can actually put more air into the engine than it is able to consume. This creates a backpressure through the system and can actually hurt the performance of your turbo. By increasing the plenum storage area, not changing the flow rate you have a larger volume of air ready for the engine when its air needs are increased. On a stock manifold you have to wait for the turbo to create the extra air the engine is waiting for.

Is this just something that I should do if I upgrade my turbo and otherwise just forget about it?

Thanks for the replies, by the way!

With a turbo you are going to gain more. There is still a benefit to what you are running.

there are many trucks well over 600hp on the stock horns. there is better places to spend more to get better power and response.

There was a good writeup on intake tests done on a dyno. I hope this link works . The test was on several of the intakes available.

Thanks! That was a good write-up! From what they did there, it looks like there is some gain down low where we really need it , and possibly cooler egt's as well.

Installed the cfm+ and no noticable performance changes.

The dyno sheets for the aftermarket intakes (except Banks) shows the best gains around 2k rpms. 40-50hp/100+tq, not bad for a bolt on part.

Im not easy to impress and i noticed a very nice gain just instaling the CFM on my truck. I do believe though its going to be more noticed in a standard tranny truck. IMO
