Modifying "AIR INTAKE HORN"
Modifying "AIR INTAKE HORN"
I was just wondering if ANYONE has taken the "GRID HEATER" out of the INTAKE HORN to get a better airflow into the INTAKE? I took mine off yesturday and noticed that you CANT even see through the **** thing because of all the heating coil's...I've got a BIG INTAKE and BIG EXHAUST.. and this HUGE RESTRICTIVE area that I'm trying to PUSH air through...What do ya think..Is there anything in the Manual that says how to take it out...just for Summertime of course....
It doesn't seem like it's that bad of a restriction, I've seen 700+ HP trucks that still have the grids. It couldn't hurt to take it out, though. Non-Dodge Cummins in medium duty trucks didn't gome with the grids at all until the 24 valves came around. I will probably pull mine after I get gauges just to see if it makes a difference - mine doesn't work anyway due to some fried relays. It started fine last winter even down into the teens unplugged so I don't plan on fixing it. The heaters just cut down on the white smoke at cold start. I think that with a single battery it has a better chance of starting in cold weather without the grid because there isn't that 30 second 80 amp draw before you even try to crank. Cummins P/N for a spacer that replaces the grid heater is 3917938. Gaskets are P/N 3913352.
