Lightbulb modifying the stock air box

I realize that this topic has been discussed before however I do not remember the details. Some people have mentioned that drilling holes on the stock air box will help the air flow. Can anybody give me the details (size and location of the holes) for this mod? Thank you very much.

i just used a hole saw for putting door ***** on, and put them through the bottom.

the side would have been better, that way the underbody wash at the car wash would not go up in there, or road spray. went thru car wash once, it did not appear to get wet with the 2 big holes on the bottom.

my MPG did not increase, though, after a few days driving.

I put a K&N (3 inch outlet- restrictvie) on it, and it jumped from 16.9 to 17.8 on hiway, and hovers mid 17 around town now. not enough gain to have the K&N void the warranty, IMO.

I posted this about a week ago and didn't get any reply. But I'm curious about taking the new 04.5 air filter and using it to replace the stock 03/04 air filter. Since it is original equip, they can't void the warranty. The new 04.5 air filter is supposed to be larger and allow more airflow. "new cold-air intake system, good for a 30-40 degree F drop" from the old design according to Dodge.

I don't know if it will fit or anything, but seems worth checking out.

I've looked at both the 04's and the 4.5's and they are the same box.

Correct, the 04 and 04.5 filters are the same. The difference is the 04.5 has a plastic piece attached to the radiator to block off part of the intake from the engine so it just gets air flow from the front, ie cooler air.

Humm....... the 4.5 I looked at didn't have that piece intstalled I guess. It was all pretty much the same with the exception of a few hoses being routed differently (in front of the airbox). I'll have to take a look at a few more.

i drilled a 4" hole in the bottom of my air box and attached a piece of aluminum screen to the hole to keep big chunks out. i don't know if it did much, but i also cut out the "X" piece in the intake pipe and the turbo does sound nice now...

No noticeable added noise. A little better spool-up.

No I didn't notice any extra intake noise, the opening points to the front of the truck though so that would probably reduce any noise I heard in the cab.
