high egt's what can i do
i'm new here. just got my first cummins, and i love it. it is very fast with the mods it has had done, but i can't sustain the power. i hit 1650 degrees by the time i'm at 40 mph. i can't do a quarter mile or a 0 -60 cause my bully dog defuels me before i'm even half way there. it will even sustain 1500+ degrees after being fully defueled if i don't lay off, which i do of course!
the bully dog people told me that my exhaust is to big, does that make sense? they told me to put the kiity back on and that might fix it. sounds like bs to me. what can i do? i've heard some say change the thermostat, but it doesn't seem like a good solution. what about water/methanol injection, or propane injection?

maybe a bigger turbo and bigger intake would help...you still running the stock turbo?
someone explain to me how a 5" exhaust would make for high EGT's??? that makes no sense to me.

I have no idea. I always thought that bigger exhaust meant cooler EGT's. At least that was always the reasoning I have heard for people buying exhaust. As for putting the kitty back on, I think that is a load of BS because that would just creat more restriction in your exhaust flow. If you still have the stock intake on, that would be a good start. When I changed intakes I saw a considerable drop in EGT's. I ran my BDTD on Crazy Larry pretty hard a few times with an aFe Stage 2 Intake, no silencer ring, and a Banks (I know, I know) dual exhaust and never saw that high of EGT's.
IMO, you need a different intake.
Also, if the intake doesn't do the job for you there may be a problem with either the EGT pyro or the board in the Outlook monitor. I have heard of a few guys having problems with the readings on the Outlook. Maybe Bully Dog will stand behind their product and send you a new Outlook to see.......

I would do an intake first before you spend bigger money on a turbo, or water/meth or whatever you have in mind. Having 37's sure increases the load on the engine too.

Hit that one on the head!!!
On my 05 with 37's I had the same problem!! An intake isn't going to drop your egt's that much. THe larger exhaust boy you really got a winner at Bullydog.. Every time I've went to 5" I've dropped egt's by 150-200 degrees.. Realistically a turbo is your best answer..

Even with 35's though, I never saw that high of temps. I would be willing to bet that his intake is giving some major restrictions or the pyrometer is inaccurate. When is the last time you cleaned/replaced your air filter?

just cleaned it. didn't help to much. do you think water injection would keep me low enough to run the quarter mile at least? what intake would you suggest? what turbo? if i do intake and turbo do i need to do injectors then?

Nah you can keep the stock injectors with an intake and a turbo. For an intake I have an aFe Stage 2 with the Pro-Guard 7 filter but if I were to do it over, I would do something like the BHAF or the *****'s Whistler and save the other $300+. The homemade intakes are much more cost efficient and they work just as well. For turbos, I have always like the Aurora turbos. Something like the Aurora 5K that Shane has.......
