Thumbs up

Great thread!!! Hi, I'm kinda new here been a member of the other Cummins site for a few years.

I just installed a 351 on my pretty much stock 03, only mods being to the exhaust.....a 4" pacbrake for an 04.5 and a MBRP muffler kit for the same. I installed an adj. boost elbow to the compressor housing, bolted her up and let her rip....only to find I had 23psi, same as the 341?? So maybe the truck is de-fueling I thought, got a quad boost fooler and tried again.....23psi still???? So I cranked in the screw on the elbow a little bit.....28psi, ah....now we are getting somewhere. So back to the garage, turned in the screw some more...feels bottomed out now, so no WG function probably. Go for a spin, 33psi.....great!! Did a few pulls to check EGT's 4th I hit 950*, 5th 1100* both at 33psi and stock fueling.

My daughter has a horse show this weekend so we will see how it goes towing (just the small trailer, can't get the Bloomer in this place!) should be pretty good I think.

Thanks for the info magilla

I wonder what your boost would be with the Smarty. I usually run mine in level 5 (90 hp) and I am debating if I really need to put a boost elbow in. I run about 30 psi on my HE341 right now (with boost elbow).

Did you manage to get the turbo off the manifold, or did you take the whole assembly off the engine?

I'm not sure what to do on mine. I could drill and tap for a boost elbow, but i'm not sure if I need to. Thinkin about just disabling the wastegate.

Huntinut,
Let us know if your trick worked for the wastegate, if it does that is how I will be doing mine!
Thanks.

Glenn, I was able to get the turbo off the manifold, soaked the nuts overnight w/penetrant. Also the bolts for the drain tube aren't horrible with a long extention and a 10mm wobble socket.

I too am curious what the boost would be with a smarty. I was getting ready to get a JR, then I needed to get a turbo and blew my budget there. Hopefully this summer I will get a JR. The truck is mainly used for towing so I think JR is all I need.

It seems to me that just putting a simple $.99 clamp on the wastegate hose would be so much easier than all these things you guys are making. I give you an "A" for effort but for a tightwad like me the clamp will have to do. It is easily adjustable too.....

Some more questions.

First of all, I apologize if all of this is answered somewhere in the last 14 pages. I did try to read it all but didn't see the answers I need.

I found an HE351 that was taken off when new (almost <20 miles). He says the wastegate is missing but comes with the elbow. I assume I need a wastegate of some sort, or can I somehow run with out one (not just dissabled, but missing). Currently I only have a smarty for extra fueling.

Will the wastegate off my '04 turbo work on the HE351?

Does the stock cast elbow on the 555 motor neck down to 3.5" or does the down pipe?

Thanks,
FB

Thanks,
FB

The elbow necks down to 3.5" at the outlet.

I don't know if you can make the wastegate from the HE341 fit on the HE351. They look pretty similar though...

I ran my 07 truck with the wastegate hose completely clamped off and had no issues. That's about as close to "No Wastegate" as you can get without actually removing it. I was only running very mild extra fueling at the time.

I run the smarty JR and it likes the 351. Magilla get one you will like it. The wastegate on the 351 I have starts to open at 15 psi and is fully open at 22. I shortened the rod and got 26. I bottomed out my boost elbow and got 35. I would try an actuator off of a 341 on a 305hp engine. Shorten the rod a 1/4" and it should be better. You can adjust the wastegate on the truck but you have to remove it once to drill out the set lock in the rod will a 7/64ths bit. You also have to apply regulated air to the actuator to get it back on the wastegate. Apply air and see when it opens. You probably don't need a boost elbow it you just adjust the wastgate rod or just clamp it off. Having a functional wastegate should free up power at max boost.

I have a dyno this weekend so i will let you all know how it does.
Well guys just came back from the dyno in Fort Collins today. I must say i'm very happy with the new 351 install, with stock sticks, stock cp3, and a pretty much stock turbo(+wastegate elbow) I laid down a nice 522 HP and 1085 TQ definetly worth the 300 i spent on the turbo> I can't say what the differance would have been with the 341 but who cares 522 ponies with a stock turbo, I'm happy. what do you guys think?

Wow,

522hp with just the TST for fueling? Is that with pressure too?

What kind of boost are you seeing and what is your wastegate/boost elbow setup?

yeah just the tst, i did turn up the rail pressue just a little on the tst, not to much though because i think i have an injector or two going bad + having the stock cp3 it just makes it surge really bad with the pressure turned all the way up. If i did it may have put down another 20 horse, because it really didn't smoke that much, pretty clean. Max boost was 42 psi and i'm using the ats plug and a adjustable elbow almost all the way in.

Very impressive #s

What were your settings on the TST?

How about EGTs?

Sounds like the TST really puts down the power. Perhaps a lot more then the Smarty?

i did 7 on power and 4 on torque and 4 on rail, if i could go back i would try 7/5 and rail on 5-6 just to see but who knows it might have been worse. i think i'm probally pushing the turbo to about max anyway. Wasen't the record like 585 horse on a stock 351 anyway. Smarty is a low rpm to mid tuner and tst is a mid to high tuner so maybe for a dyno tst is better but for the street or a race smarty is better BUT if you stack both you are in for one sweet as* ride. Egts were hot because they maxed out the MPH all the way to 112 some guys were going to 130 with the smarty.( you can't change Speed with TST) i think around 1600* was about max, but thats what you get with a stock turbo and lots of fuel = HOT! I just put this turbo on just for this dyno, in a couple of months i will take it off and put the ONE'S I really want.
