HE351 Turbo Swap info...
Well my HE351 showed up today so hopefully I can get it on in the next week or so.
Called ATS and they finally got the plug thing figured out. So I should be good there. Did anyone tap the plug for the boost elbow?
Whats the process for putting some oil in the turbo? Syringe?
Do you need to do anything special with bleeding the oil line or anything like that? Or any special procedure for doing the oil line?
Unhook it right off the turbo and just screw onto new turbo, or remove from engine first?
I guess I will see if I can get the bolts on the turbo off. I have been spraying PB blaster on there, so hopefully I will get lucky.
Also, anyone have any luck with painting the exhaust housing and elbow to keep the rust off?

my he351 didnt just bolt up the studs need to be longer or i my case the flange needed to be ground down. i also drilled the holes a little bigger to make it fit easier. on a bonus note i noticed the 4 inch elbow was already installed booooooo ya but the turbo seems a little better and hopefully it will be when i get my smarty!
So it appears there are two studs in the manifold and two on the turbo?
My turbo came with the two in the turbo.
So order up the 2 studs from the dealer?
Is it recommended to replace the gasket inbetween the manifold and turbo?

The two studs(back side) in the exhaust manifold need to be longer by about 1/4' as the turbo flange on the 351 is thicker by ~1/4" the two studs on the turbo(away from motor) are the same as the 341.
As for oil I used a narrow neck funnel pour some in and waited for it to slowly go in while turning the turbo by hand, there are probably better ways, but that worked for me. Mine came with a new gasket, but no ones ever mentioned wheather it should be changed or not.

Found two studs in the box, and a used gasket that looks like its in good shape (looks new).
So I should be good there.
Getting the old studs out of the manifold sounds like PIA. People thread two nuts on there or use a stud remover?
Anyone ask the dealer how much for the gasket? Part#? Worth replacing it?
And did anyone put the boost elbow in the ATS plug?

i cut the top off of the electronic wastgate actuator that is with the he351 about 3/16" above nut , apoxy all the small holes in bottom of the plug between the o rings and tap the top of the plug. i also drilled a larger hole all the way thru and cut the long piece below the o rings off. i think it will work. if i get time i will try to post a pic.
i left the wastegate in and drilled 2 holes one where the old line went and plugged that one and then one where under pressure put his it worked great i had to get 2 new longer studs and the two in the back i couldnt get out so i just ground the flange.
Did you guys keep your actuator off of your 341 or use the one off of the 351. My actuator on my 351 sucks only 22psi my 341 would do 26. The trouble is the 341 is on its way to a new home in a 4bt durango. I adjusted my wastegate rod and got to 26 psi. I will adjust it to get 32-33 psi. I can get 35 with the hose clamped off. I now have some power. My boost elbow screw was all the way in but it still must let some air by. At least I know how to solve the problem now.
Good to know CRTooney.
I guess I won't bother to drill and tap a spot in the housing for a boost elbow.
Whats the best way to plug the hose and not look tacky?
Remove the hose and put a vacuum cap on the outlet?

Where are you guys getting the longer studs for the back side? Is that only an 03 issue? Would the studs on my 04 manifold be longer? Would it just be easier to buy a later model manifold?
Also, is anyone porting the stock manifolds out for a little more flow before you put them back on your trucks?
