IS this at 40 PSI with the elbow adjusted at all?

I can hit 38 PSI on my truck's HE341, with the eblow adjusted all the way in......

Yes i adjust the elbow for 40 psi. I tried running the boost higher than 30 psi with the HE341 but never saw much of a gain.

At what rpm does the he351 light, is the response close to a hy35 or he341 on the bottom.

Just like any other turbo, it depends on your fueling. I would guess it's a touch slower than the 341 due to the larger compressor, but the exhaust side is the same on both turbos, so the difference would be minimal.

Once you add a little fuel duration or pressure the lag will completely disappear from either one.

What about drilling and tapping a hole for the boost elbow.....

Where exactly should this be done at?.....same/similar location as the stock HE341?

Any worries about shaving getting inside the turbo?

You can install the elbow anywhere in the compressor cover or use another boot source, boost bolt, tapped intake, etc. As far as shavings, i shove a rag up the outlet past the drilling spot & pull it out with any shavings when done.

all you need is a turbo off of a 04.5 07 5.9 and an adjustable elbow that is it, its a complete bolt on.

I was playing yesterday in 5th gear and the most boost I can build by 1500 rpm is 18psi. No matter if I ride the brakes, hit a hill, feather the fuel pedal, 18 psi boost is all I could get.

Once again, lugging the motor in 5th gear, the most boost I could build by 1700 rpm was 26psi. If I put my truck in a lower gear, I can't get that much boost at that low of rpm, there is no way to load the motor long enough for it to happen short of riding the brakes for a few hundred feet.

Same situation 5th gear, I could build 38 psi boost at 2000 rpm and then 48 psi by 2400 rpm.

Spool up is a vague term. I will say it is very very similar to my stock HX35 but if you've never ran a 2nd gen, that provides little point of reference.

I'm using a spring wastegate on my he in a twin setup. Not real hard to build and with the bored out wastegate it will control boost with no creep.

How much of a gain would be on a stock truck (no fueling mods) then with a smarty?

Stock for stock, boost, fueling, etc. there is probally little to no gain. You should see lower EGT's though. Now raise the boost to where these turbo's shine (upper 30's to 40 psi) & add some fueling with the Smarty & your truck will come ALIVE.

Not only are the Cummins guys looking for the turbos, the NOPI tuners & V8 guys like them also. With the 5.9L trucks getting to be a few years old now i think finding low mileage take off's is going to get pretty hard soon.
