You won't have to use and adjustable boost elbow, however, the stock wastegate actuator on the HE351cw likes to open around 26-28 psi boost, so if you want more than that "you do" you need to address the wastegate.

You could entirely disable the wastegate via pinching the line, never hooking up a line, plugging the line, turnbuckling the wastegate actuator rod, wiring the rod, adding a tension type spring to the rod, shimming the actuator with washers, shortening the rod by drilling the set pins and threading the rod shorter, etc.

IMO, if you have 450 HP of fuel or less, you don't need a wastegate on this turbo. It will tow, hot rod, cool, and spool just fine without the wastegate. If you try to tow 15K up a mountain with 450hp worth of fuel, you will need a wastegate!

If you try to break the stock turbo HP record of 556Hp, you will need a wastegate.

If you throw 500+ hp worth of fuel at the 1/4 mile track, you need the wastegate to help control backpressure and lower the 1800*F egt's.

Great turbo for the money invested.

Turbo Specs:
HE341: 54/58/9cm
HE351: 60/60/9cm

Stock 03-04 turbo does about 22-24 PSI stock, effectively.

With an adjustable elbow, the 03-04 turbo can hit 35-38 PSI, but is out of the efficiency range.

The HE351 can see 40 psi, stock.

Good, simple, cheap, and effective upgrade!

Have had my 06 on my 04 now for bout two weeks. Have never been above 28PSI. And thats with a VERY small non adjustable fitting/elbow. What needs to be done to get more boost? At 28lbs on it now, is the same as the factory 04.....

Adjustable boost elbows are available on E-bay & will allow you to get that boost turned up. I run mine at 40 psi.

hmm... i bought a 351c several months ago to toss onto my '03 HO and never got around to it. Now there is a rather large toy hauler 5er in my near future that I plan on hauling with my truck. Do the folks who have done this upgrade think it's worthwile for a heavy towing (trailer will be in the 16.5k range)? My truck has a TST CR47 on it, so will combining the TST with the 351c turbo push the envelope for this truck?

If you DON'T use a different turbo you will be pushing the envelope for your stocker. The HE351 should handle what you want to do very well and will simply make your engine that much better.

I have one question here. Is this swap something someone with very little mechanical experice can do? I did put the 4" elbow and downpipe on myself, but I'm worried about getting into this project. What do you think?

TIA

I'd hate to think what drive pressure would be without the wastegate... at even 400HP of fueling. Most guys pull their feet back into the seat at RPM for the clutch, but in my truck it's for the Holset when they notice the TIP gauge.

I have been hitting up the 1/4 mile once a month so I have a pretty good feel for the HE351. I'm going to try letting boost creep into the 50 psi range to what it does for or against EGTs. Right now the gate limits boost to 47-48 psi but then the dang bleeder wastegate controller seems to not bleed enough pressure and boost falls to 42-43 psi range. I'm going to add an adjustable spring to the end of the wastegate rod to put a little more preload on the gate for next friday's 1/4 mile. I wonder if EGT's will come down with more boost or if drive pressure will get so high EGT's keep climbing. 1745-1790 max egt's as recorded by the Adrenaline data logger makes me think I can get better topend egt control with some wastegate adjustments.

Thoughts?

How effecient is the stock turbo at 50psi? Sure seems like that is going to be way to much for it. I ran mine at up 48psi for awhile and anything more than 35psi and it didnt seem to make a difference as well as egt's skyrocketed.

Well, hot air is better than no air... but TIP's going to be 75psi+ at those boost levels.

Drive pressure & EGT go hand-in-hand.

Not very- but it's still making power.

90 MPH 50*F air flowing through the CAC ought to help out with the "super heated" air. Come Friday, I'll know a little more about HE351 at 50 psi.
