Yes that's it. It's a well made piece that plugs several unused passages in the compressor housing.

If you bolt up a 04.5+ HE351cw and touch nothing, it will be fully operation and the wastegate will open at 26-28 psi boost. If you have fueling upgrades, you will want to take advantage of the increased airflow and then you will need to shim the wastegate actuator, or add a wastegate controller, or pinch the silicone line, etc. HE351 comes stock with a hose barb that directly feeds boost pressure to the silicone line. No need to tap a new elbow unless you want an adjustable brass elbow and you don't like hose clamps and line splicing.

When my truck is set to kill, about 500 HP worth of fueling, it runs cooler at 48psi than it does at 40psi. I'm still tweaking things but I think 50 psi is going to be the magic number for best egt control in 1/4 mile race.

With than said, I think 90% of the guys upgrading to the HE351 would be just fine pinching the line shut and effectively disabling the wastegate. I'm to the point now where drive pressure will blow open my wastegate at 48 psi boost so if I want more, I have to add an external spring or turnbuckle to mechanically hold the wastegate rod pulled tight. My wastegate opens right about 68psi drive pressure when I have to boost signal completely pinched off. Also note that I have ported my wastegate so it has more surface area for the drive pressure to push against. Also note that I shimmed the wasteagate actuator to put more preload spring pressure on the wastegate flapper so i'd guess that most stock HE351's will open around 50 psi boost all on their own.

Great thread, I picked up my HE351 turbo from Craigslist a couple of days ago. It took a while to source an exhaust elbow but I finally found one at BD Power (BD is local to me). While I was there I asked if they had a takeoff 4" downpipe as I still have the 3.5" one on my truck. They could only find this stuff!

Cost me $50 for the elbow, the downpipe and rest of the 5" exhaust was thrown in for free. I wasn't looking for 5", but the price was right so I'll try it! I'll remove the Magnaflow muffler and put in a Nelson 86521M 5" as I prefer quiet exhaust. Meanwhile I've emailed ATS Diesel for a price with shipping on the plug and seals for the turbo to cap of the wasgate controller. I tried to purchase the adjustable boost elbow from the seller on Ebay but he refuses to sell to and ship to Canada (we must be considered evil up here).

For $40, I think it is very inexpensive and would just suggest buying one

Part #'s for the ATS plug:
2272-202-003 Wastegate solenoid cap
9263K143 O-ring (1)
9263K305 O-ring (2)

From my readings, ATS uses the plug in their compound turbo kits, that retain the stock turbo.

Also look at this link, which shows a similar wastegate solenoid cap:

The picture is on Page 8, step #12

Actually if you install Banks Monster Exhaust, you remove the exhaust downtube and install a true 4" down pipe. Got one on my 03 Blue Ox (that is what my daughter calls it). Mounts cleanly and easly directly to the turbo housing. Just throwing that out there.

Stolen info from another thread:

04.5-07 HE351: 950 CFM
03-04 HE341: 800 CFM and 850 CFM

So, what is the primary gain switching to an HE351 turbo onto a 2003 Cummins. Reason I ask I have a line on a brand new I can get. Just want to know if its worth the hassel.

Sorry, but will the banks big head wastegate work with the HE351. I have it on my stock turbo and would switch it.

The primary reason is to add airflow to the engine. If you have increased fueling you will gain HP & lower EGT's.

Good thread. It was most certainly needed. Now we just need a search button sticky.

Seriously though, good info here.

I also thought I'd add this. First link is to a modified HE341. Because soon we won't be able to find a decent HE351. My guess is the just swap a 351 compressor wheel into the 341 housing. The second link is to the High Tech Turbo HX40 style 4" down pipe that deletes the cast exhaust elbow. Which would really sweeten the HE351 swap. I'm sure you could just buy it direct from HTT.

If you plan on going with an exhaust brake sometime in the future you would be better off going with the factory 4 in 4 out cast elbow and factory down pipe.

Even at stock fueling you can see 60 psi of drive pressure from this turbo w/put a WG.. I have seen 55 psi on short WOT burts to 33psi of boost.. and I have seen 37 psi of boost towing (stock fueling).. Remember stock valve springs are 60 or 63lbs...

IMHO a WG is mandatory on this turbo.

It would be nice if the plug didn't plug the bypass hole, then you could just put an elbow in the bypass hole and not drill tap anything...

Everything I have read says the WG on the HE351 is the same as the 341, but the air is not supplied to it until ~28-32 psi.. so that puts it at a 22psi WG.

I have seen well over 50psi of DP.. So I am not sure about that.
