dealer wants to relocate stock liftpump to in-tank on 04.5 - good idea or not?

My 04.5 truck is in for service and I mentioned that I see lift pump pressures around 3 or 4psi with the stock lift pump at the filter in the engine compartment. They are willing to update it to the tank as part of my warranty.

My question is whether or not this relocation has any benefit or negative? I need to know now as it is scheduled for work tomm

my truck is all stock and under warranty. 45000 miles and crummy mpg. thanks bc3

All stock or with little mods it will be fine and work good. The intank units are good for no or moderate modded trucks. Works well and for 0 dollars can't beat it.

Mine went intank 3 yrs ago at 35000 miles, now have over 124,000 mi and have had no problems. I would let them do it unless your are planning substantial power increase.

are there any drawbacks otherwise? not sure why they relocated them to the tank in the first place...

Dodge went to in-tank starting in '05. The lift pump fix for all 3rd gens is to replace with the in-tank pump.

The only draw-back is you will have to remove it if you decide to go to something aftermarket, like the FASS.

Hello,

The engine mounted one had issues. In tank is the best because it can push fuel. Electric pumps do not do well sucking fuel thru the lines. The in tank works fine with light mods .

Now if only someone would make a "drop in" in tank that could handle high fuel flow.

2003 ram and mopardamo hit it right on. fuel pumps are generally designed to push fuel and be gravity fed thats why the pump behind the canister poops out. like everyone else said if little to no mods are expected its a great place for it. but if someday you need more fuel (bigger mods for power) it does make it a hassle.

If you ever plan on modding so you will need more fuel just buy aftermarket now. It will save you all the headache of dropping the tank, farting around with an aftermarket pickup and possibly having issues not being able to use all the fuel in the tank.
