04.5 Lift Pump Question Dealer Wants To Relocate To Tank

My 04.5 truck is in for service and I mentioned that I see lift pump pressures around 3 or 4psi with the stock lift pump at the filter in the engine compartment. They are willing to update it to the tank as part of my warranty.

My question is whether or not this relocation has any benefit or negative? I need to know now as it is scheduled for work tomm

my truck is all stock and under warranty. thanks bc3

My truck has the retro in-tank version when the LP failed at about 52,000 miles.

Not sure if it has any true downsides, because it is supposed to help with reliability........

for a truck stock like your there have not been any issues with the intank retro fit. As for upgrading in the power depparment then would consider aftermarket pump such as walbro, fass, raptor etc. For stock truck no worries.

the '03 and '04's had the lift pump mounted to the block by the filter. And they were having a lot of failures. In '05 they went to the lift pump in the tank. Much more efficient design as the pump is not pulling the fuel up to the filter, and the pump is not subjected to the vibrations with being attached to the engine. Any 03-04's that have a failure will get the in tank pump. Mine failed at 98,000+ (thank goodness, still under warranty). Have 154,000 on it now with no issues at all.

my truck is an 04.5. pump was mounted on the back of the fuel filter housing. i replaced mine at 40,000 miles with a fass set up before it failed. a lot easier to do the mod than having the pump in the tank! bite the bullet and pass on the warranty work on this one- buy an after market set up- fass, walbro. or air dog

Well the 03 and 04's have the lift pump on the backside of the filter housing not the block. Some 04.5s got the in tank pumps and some didnt. They finally went to it for sure in 05. So if your 04.5 has it on the backside of the filter housing i would get the block off plate from vulcan and put an aftermarket pump on it. An if you order that from them you can just do what i did...order the big line kit and power wire extension so you have no CEL! pm me if you have any questions

The in tank replacement will do just fine until you start modding and need more fuel.

my truck is all stock and under warranty. You can't beat free! thanks bc3

I agree with you guys that aftermarket pumps are the way to go, but lets remember he is talking FREE! And he has a stock ride so......this one is more a question of if he feels like spending the money or not.

Also if you do go with the in-tank lift pump be sure to get the old factory pickup canister back from them!!! Trust me it may come in handy one day. And if nothing else someone will buy it from you for at least 20-50 bucks. The factory pickup can be used to solve fuel starvation issues when you are below a 1/4 of a tank of fuel.

did you replace this pump yourself or have it done? I can't imagine it would be too tricky, did you buy it online? thanks, Jim.

For long term reliability with a stock set up go with the in tank set up. If you plan for Horsepower Upgrades then go with the Frame mount pumps and filters such as the Glacier Diesel Kits. If having the in tank done under warranty for free then do get the original pick up canister. As this will make installation of a frame mount pump pick up tube much easier than drilling holes in the fuel tank.

Mine went around 23-24,000 miles. Went with the intank replacement. It's holding up just fine.

Only 8,500 miles or 85,000 miles on that 03? Give us a little history.

Sorry for the typing error 85,000. I bought the beast in AZ theft recovery with a clean title. took it to dodge for a repair and they said my warrinty was void because the truck was in a bad accedent so i'm fighting with them as we speek. Any way no mods on it as it sits in front of my house broken.

They normally stop running.Have you checked for codes? So you took it to a dealer hoping for a WARRANTY repair on a stolen recovery.Kinda started with poor odds.So what did THEY say was wrong with it or did THEY want money upfront?
