slight, intermittant pinging noise at idle
Ever since this summer, I've had a very slight, intermittent pinging at idle (700 and 1100 rpm). It seems more prevalent when the engine is hot and you can hear it when standing by the passenger side front fender and you can hear it coming out of the exhaust. I've got the Smarty JR ME set on stock power with the California deletes. I never noticed it before the deletes.
Since the deletes there has been no codes, fuel economy is great (except when towing) and the truck starts and runs great. The Edge Insight shows no hot egts when its happening (intake temps are fine too) and you cannot hear it when driving.
Is it just the open exhaust thats causing it to resonate? Maybe its done it all the time and the bunged up exhaust muffled it?
I'm slightly OCD and need to know what might be up.

Not sure what that could be... but from what you describe it would seem like it would be coming from the turbo... not sure if one of the variable vanes could possible be making a noise when opening or closing.
You would have a cow if you heard mine. Injector pump rattles like its about to come through the hood, but still runs as good as ever. If it dies ill just throw an II in there.

Well, I've done some more research and apparently on the 6.7, when the egr is blocked off, it can cause some pinging. This is just the regular diesel detonation, sometimes it will do it, sometimes not. When the egr is engaged, the inert gas thats pumped into the cylinder eliminates this noise.

I 'm glade you found where the ping or ticking noise was coming from. After doing the full delets i herd the same sound, i thought it was comming from the clutch since mine needs replacing.

Well Ive got something similar, but its the CP3 rattling. Almost sounds like the valves just ticking away, but more pronounced. Like a leprechaun with a 5 gallon bucket of rocks trying to beat on the hood pronounced.
Ok not THAT bad, but still noticeable.

I'm sure you're just dying for that thing to take a dump so you can upgrade and spend some of that driving money huh?

Ive got plans for my truck next year if life in general allows it.
Im debating on a 1800$ full pump build, or toss a 400$ bag of parts at it. The Bag O' Parts will support hunnerd sticks so.......

Dump the $ into it! It will just make you want to drive more and pay for itself!!! Sweet deal and you can start to educate your kids on this process to help justify as well. Everyones happy when Daddy's happy right ?
