Looking at new trucks

Looking at new trucks

Soon I will be in the market for a new truck. I currently drive a problem child 2006 6.0L power stroke. I am will to explore outside of Ford. I heard some good things about the 6.7L as far a mpgs go. But I have also heard the DPF have been causing problems. I generally drive 10-12k a year towing a 14x7 enclosed trailer nearly 500 miles per month. I looking at what truck will fit my needs best. I will be going for a 3500 quad cab long bed with this truck.

Any help is great on making my decision.

Best thing to do is drive one. 6.7L with six speed auto and integrated exhaust brake is awesome. Mileage is nothing to write home about. 15/18 city/hwy. Towing 10-12.

I coming from left field, but I have an 05 QC Hemi Ram. It has been 100% reliable, solid, quiet not one complaint. I just put new tires on at 75,000 miles, thats the only thing to wear out. I think that you will be pleasantly surprised how far Dodge has come quality wise. Try slamming a door, sounds like a bank vault. This is coming from a former Toyota owner.

I got my '03 in late '05 with 24,799 on the odo. All I know for a fact is that it was in a hail storm at some point as the roof is dimpled noticeably.

Here we are at 126K and a bit and no real difference can be told from when I got it. No rattles, squeaks etc. except for what I have in the back seat area (toolbox and tacklebox with pipe fittings and such) The tools rattle and the tool box squeaks.

I did have to do a front wheel bearing/hub assembly on Tuesday, but I live at the end of a fairly rough road and until today was running 80psi in each tire.

I knew I wanted a Cummins after driving buddies '01 and seeing it get high 16s pulling a trailer FULL of boat motors and parts from Chi town back to Houston.

I came from a '90 F350 that had a non turbo 7.3 and squeaks and rattles to spare! I kind of miss that truck however...

Anyhow my boss is a die hard Ford guy, and doubted that Dodge was any good.

I agree that Dodge has come a looooong way!

I felt your pain. I just got rid of my '05 Powerstroke two weeks ago for a Dodge/Cummins. I never even considered buying another new Ford after that fiasco. That 6.0 situation stung me pretty bad financially and I still can't believe they never managed to get the whole egr, egr cooler, head stud and puking issues worked out.

Only 450 miles on the DC so far, but I couldn't be happier. Plus there sure is a lot more room under the hood compared to those V8 diesels.

But get what you like because these new trucks ain't cheap and you need to be happy with your decision.

i drove all of the big 3 emissions engines. My sig shows what my choice was. i am completely happy.

Both our Powerstrokes were miserable failures as hard-working service trucks; though they got the job done when they ran... which sadly wasn't nearly enough after they tallied ~ 70K miles.

I've heard that they make pretty nice Cowboy Cadillacs, although the styling (like the Ram) is love it or hate it!

I had an 6.0 Powerjoke!!! At 39,000 miles it got a new turbo and egr. At 55,000 miles it started to lose power and ford couldnt tell anything was wrong with it. At 59,000 miles, I was sick of it and traded it in for my 6.7. All i can say is WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW. Everything is night and day between them both.

If this 10-12k per yr and 500 per mo towing a 6 to 7k# trailer is all you need the truck for, and you want a CTD, I would try to find a good "certified" used truck w/50 to 100k miles on it, the cummins engines don't start to loosen up till 20-40k miles (mine took 45), it'll take you 2 yrs to get a new one broke in. I certainly would not get a 3500, way too much truck for your app. even the 2500 is a bit stiff riding without a load. Your CTD wants to run, it will be like keeping a big dog, in an apartment.
I pulled my 7x12 around with a 1500 hemi for about a year and got tired of overworking the engine but I drove 4-5k mi a month with the trailer.
I would take a serious look at a gas burner you may save $.

Maybe the 3500 is too much so then it would be 2500. I guess I got to out there a test drive one once I to court on my LEMON STROKER. The mileage was said to not be great but it alot but then the new 6.4 power stroke.

Main concern is the problem i have been hearing about DPF clogging up? Please inform me or have figured anything out yet.

I believe that DPF clog is happening when the engine is left to idle for long periods at low rpm (below1k).
You will have to get verification on this, but I think that's the issue.
