fuel filter differences

Search is behaving badly...errors out then won't let me run it again....blah blah.

My question has probably been answered before.
How can you tell from the outside if the filter is the filter/shell combined unit or if it has been swapped for the type that you can replace only the filter.

The stock 08 style filter unscrewed from the bottom, the top of the filter setup is rigid.

The new style '10 and up is a drop in type like the 5.9's

From the outside, the only difference would be the serial number on the shell/filter.

The original filter was

And now the upgraded shell filter is:

MOPAR 68061633

And the main difference is the filtration level with the new filter/shell combo for 5 micron.

for some reason i dont like the drop in filters like the 5.9's. I wish they was like our mack semi.. about three filters in a row and they are screw on's. oops forgot about the one beside the injection pump too.

Get your fuel filter from Cummins or Freightliner it is a FS-43257 that is the one that you replace the cartridge, should be $35 to $40, less than mopar i think. Loosen off the filter then open the drain, takes a couple of min to drain, other wise you will be covered in diesel. I own a mobile oil change service for heavy trucks and found out the hard way.

the canister style is different the inside of the old style has ribs the canister for the newer "filter in a filter" is smooth to allow for the larger element. you can't install the new elements into the older canisters.

Good point. The old canister is fluted inside and won't hold the new elements.

Had the truck at the dealership for the ECM service notification and asked what a shell/filter set up would cost. $80. "Hello, Geno? I need to order...."
